I went on Advanced Driving

Today I went on what BMW SA offers...Advanced Driving.
I did the precision driving course!! It was awesome!
We started with a 30minute lecture on car dynamics and how the safety system works. Then we went out on the track.
A pro-driver showed us the turns, and took us for a lap. Then we got to drove. We were 2 poeple per car, and did many MANY laps! They taught us all about engine power, grip, over steer, understeer! It was an amazing experience to take corners at 140km/h and drive on a race track!
They then did some demo's on braking, and the dsc on and off and then we did some more laps on the circut!
We broke for lunch then headed out onto the skid pan.

We simulated different emergency situations and mastered the art of oversteer.

The pro-drivers were all chatting and they all agree hands down, that the E90 way out handles the E46 on the track! We were driving stock 330i's NOT even with sportpacks...just standard suspension!! I am so amazed at how the car handles! WOW!!!

Here are a couple of pics

Broken1, thanks for the pics. It must have been an exciting experience.
I have to ask you about one of the comments you made and that was how well the 330i handled without sport package. I am debating over whether to get the sport package on the 330i or not. I would like to have fun with the car in terms of taking it out on some twisty roads but the majority of the driving will be quite tame.
Anyone have any suggestions on whether I should or shouldn't get the sport pkg. Anyone get a car without the sport package and now regret not getting it?

Hey Broken 1, looks like you had great weather for your wonderful day out.
Did you take your own car for a spin as well, or was it just the organiser's cars?

If you had a drive in the 330, how did it compare to your 320d?

Sounds like you had a fun day and learned a lot of useful info.
Cheers, David

I didn't get the sport package. Most of my driving is also tame, but I too am sometimes inclined to go for the twisty roads (at high speed). Remeber, the car is a sports sedan, set up for sporty driving - even with the normal suspension. I can safely say the car handles PERFECTLY with the standard suspension! We were doing wide corners at about 160km/h and chicanes at about 60-80km/h... It was quite scary...but wow...that bmw holds the road like I've never.
They all say the E90 handles mountains better than the E46 did...and one or two even mentioned it was thanks to the 5-point multilink rear suspension! The only thing I regret not having the sports package is the sports seats...the normal ones just don't give as much support in speedy cornering as the sport ones do -> you don't miss them till you notice though! I decided ride comfort for everyday was more important thought - as poeple have said the sports suspension gets a bit figety!

We weren't allowed to use our own cars. I was the only one there on the day who actually drove an E90. The 330i obvioulsy is alot faster, but my diesel has alot more punch thanks to the low end torque. My only regret is how nice that engine (330) sounds at about 6000rpm...it's got this race car appeal to it..WOW! I wouldn't want to take my car for a spin either...those brakes got sooo hot they were smoking on some of the cars...and the tyres...whew! It was such a fun day though..we got in so many laps! The worst part was having to sit in traffic on the way home!

At the end of the day, the pro-rally driver who was the instructor in my car took us out for a hot lap (or 3) and boy...did we motor around that track! Kyalami (apparently) is a very technical track, and has very difficult corners to master...but wow...i've never been thrown around a car like that AND I've never seen a car stick to the road like that either!!

Still, I bet you were grinning from ear to ear all the way home - and then some!

Nice story/pics, but where is the sideways action?

E46 M3 is still a different league, I had one(this one) before:

I did pay for the course. The precision driving course is R1650 + vat (R1881 inc). At first I thought it was alot of money and regreted my impulse decision...but it was really worth every cent!!! REALLY!!

For details goto
http://www.bmw.co.za/Services/ADriving/DEFAULT.asp

I tried getting a course out of my dealer, but they only offered to send me on their half day course they organise every six months or so (which i've done twice). The precision driving course includes the half day on the skid pan!
