A and AB class (usually 2+ channels) for less distortion.
D and DB class (typically mono) for thermal efficiency. I would go with a Class D or DB if you are hitting lows because distortion mostly occurs at higher frequencies. Honestly, for a subwoofer it doesn't really matter what amplifier you have as long as you have a good power source and the amplifier provides enough wattage to your subwoofer.

There is no such thing as class DB. Distortion doesn't mostly occur at higher frequencies, we're just more sensitive to it. To even begin to hear distortion at low frequencies it has to be at or over 10%, yes TEN PERCENT. We can hear distortion at around ONE percent in midrange and high frequencies. There is also one major drawback to class D designs, poor control over the speaker. Yes, the amp will be small, run cooler, and make good power but an AB will sound better at the expense of size and heat. Maybe, it depends on what stock system you have. You want to use the new amp to "solve your problem", what exactly IS your problem? |

Your amp powers your subs, not the other way around. If your amp makes more power than your subs are rated for it's not a big deal. Having said that you would be GROSSLY overpowering a 225 Watt sub with a 1200 Watt amp. Why not wire the sub for 4 Ohms(I'm assuming it's a dual 2 ohm sub)? That way you'll get more control over the sub (lower impedances lower the damping factor) and limit the amount of power the amp delivers to the sub. Worst case, you blow the sub up and you get a new one anyway. |

there is no sub in MTXs lineup that's a single coil 1 ohm. it's got to be a dual 2 ohm which means it can be wired for 4 ohms as well.
what's the model number of the sub? |
