keyfob store great amount of information

so I was in my dealer today because they were going to repair my door handle that was pelling off, so this is the 1st time that I go to service, so my service advisor ask me for my key I give it to him and he inserted in a little thing on this computer for like 5 sec, and it reads the keyfod, it give him everything the VIN, color, model , production date, miles, and key fob # and I was like wow and does the key store all that inf and he was like jeje yes , let me show you something and he click on a icon were it says more at the screen shows, the keyfob # 1, confort access_NO alarm_NO memory seats_Yes_2, and it show my radio stations, on a list but like all together it was FM1 1_949 2_1075 3_931 etc... it shows the AC_auto driver_65 passanger_65 recirculation_onA and I was like wow the keyfob store all of that !! and he was like yes. and we was like and there is more info that our technician can see.

I did not know that the keyfob had all that info I think is really cool
and how technology as make possible the store that great amount of info in a single key. now I see why each cost $340

my key fob stores up to 500 mp3's and 20 hours of video. I love it! If i could only figure out where the headphone jack is.

To be honest, you could buy the device in the fob that holds all of the information for around $10. That will get you an active RFID chip which can hold 4MB of information and its getting smaller, holding more and cheaper every day.

But anyway I'll agree that it really is neat technolgy..:rocks:

Their computers used to store max rpm. BMW has to walk a fine line between keeping tuners in business and determining whether a warranty claim is due to BMW or driver error (ie, performance mods/chips..etc etc).

Hah some dealers are ripping you off. To order a key here, its only $130 or so. But yea it is cool how much is stored in the actual key. I am amazed at that.

My wife says they did the same thing with the key to her Mini and were able to tell her she had a small dent in the bumper that they could repair for $100.

Isn't there a law against using stored information from the car against consumers when it comes to warranty issues?
