325i then 328i
So since the 328i is coming out in 3 weeks. What is every one going to do if you bought your 325i, cause the price on the car will drop so much when you go to trade it in? Its pretty messed up if you ask me.
btw : i took the 335 coupe for a drive with a pro driver. We went about 140mph (it was an event they had here in miami)

Bought my car to drive, not worry about resale value. When I do go to sell, it will be sold privately and command top dollar b/c I look after my cars.

Thats why leasing one is better, especially when you dont keep it for long.

IMO, unlike the 330i, the 325i is not getting hurt by the new models because of the different audience that the 2 models attract. For the power hungry, getting the 45 more HP and the nice torgue curve more than worth the price difference. For the rest of us, paying $1500 more for 15HP upgrade is pretty much a wash, many would actually prefer to give up the extra power and get some other upgrade instead. The jury is still out on the 325i, until the 323i is released (if it is ever released in the US). If the 2.5L 200HP 323i is still over $30K (as I suspect it will be), the 325i comes on top, if not then it might affect the resale value.

If the 328i was coming in at the same price the 325i was leaving, then you'd definately take a hit on resale value. But I'm guessing the 328i is going to cost a couple thousand more, so I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I'm contemplating whether I'd like to get a 325i while I still can, because the 328's are looking to be out of my price range.

the 328 feels substantially faster than the 325... it would take a big discount to draw somebody away from it

Add the new training fee of $180 and the Sept '05 increase of $300 and I really don't feel so bad about not ponying up all the extra dollars that I'm only going to find necessary when I meet an IS350 or an '07 G35 on the road. Which won't be too often. |

I disagree with the loss of value, although time and market will tell. Because the 328i costs about $1,500 more there is already an offset. Also, people buying used cars are buying USED cars. You rarely have a buyer making a decision between a brand new vehicle and a used one. Might make a difference when both models are in the mix in the used market - but the 325i will always be at least one year older, and therefore worth less.
I don't think there is any way to draw a direct comparison.

Not too worried since BMWs are always in demand. The fact it is going to be the most affortable one make it more attractive. most 325/328 buyers are more interested in getting into the brand than top performance.

It's a BS thinking...
THen many of the previous models would suffer the same way which did not happen -- 323, 525, 545, why would you get the 328 if you can get a 330 (one year down the road, used). Many people do not care about extra 15 HP on 4000 lbs car, 0.1 sec means nothing. As long as I got what I wanted out of it, I am more than happy with the 325. I was thinking about the 335, but then realized that I would be able to feel the difference maybe once a week in Dallas (or any other big city) and that could not justify spending extra $15+k... Of course, when the M3 comes out that will justify everything |

Jaws
I keep my cars prestine. I have a 98 540, 31000 miles. It is absolutly showroom condition. Garaged since new, you get the idea. The dealer offered $10200. When he saw it saw the miles said maybe $13500. If I sold it on my own a couple of thousand more. It you consider the hours (my neighbors laugh at me) it's not worth the money. It is however a lober of love and pride. What I'm trying to say is top dollar? Don't kid yourself! |

I agree w/ Jaws and the funny, but the funny thing is that both he and I have gone thru the same cars... from a S2000 to a '06 325i... It also though really depends upon the availability and geographical location of the car... I.E. the S2000 was released originally in limited #'s and thus when I sold mine, I was able to make a substancial profit on the sale. Bimmers are notoriously more available in the kind of areas that most of us live in, thus producing greater depreciation on the resale values...

Whatever.
The fact is that BMW dropped the ball and offered the 325i and 330i as underpowered replacements for the three series line and are now playing catch up. Resale values can and probably WILL be affected--time will obviously tell..
