Bluetooth... is it worth it?
Hi guys,
I just placed an order for a 2010 335. It is pretty bare with the M-pack, heated seats and Bluetooth. The only option I am not conviced about is the Bluetooth. The car will be used mostly on weekends and I don't have the need for the BMW Assist, because I have AAA. I know the car's location can be tracked if stolen, but would the tracking be active at all times, when I don't want people to know where I am. I wouldn't be talking on the phone that much in the car anyway to benefit from the hands free feature. Also, would it affect my resale or lower my insurance? Any pros and cons are appreciated. Thank you for your input! |

I will never buy another car without this feature, due to business but changing laws as well. I say get it or chances are you will regret it.

I have it on both the Range Rover and the 325i, and it is SO useful! Click the buttons on the steering wheel and dial the number on a menu on the radio. Plus, you don't have to worry about holding a cell, or getting pulled over. However, the only thing that might stop you is that the conversation is heard on the car's stereo, so anyone who's in the car can hear, but it's not that much to worry about.

What does BMW Assist have to do with having AAA?

+1, completely worth it for a daily driver. If you're only driving it on the weekends, you could probably do without it though.

For me, it's absolutely invaluable. I use it every day. In fact, when I have a service loaner car, one of the first things I do is pair it up with my phone. Of course I delete the connection when returning it.

It works really well in this car. Connects and disconnects perfectly!

I really like the feature- very convenient. That said, features such as bluetooth, homelink, and navigation cost about 10x what their true market value is. I could see paying maybe double or even triple since they're neatly integrated into the car, but what BMW, and many others, charge for these features is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure you have a garage door opener already, and you can get a bluetooth earpiece for $30, or a bluetooth/navigation setup for $220, which you can use in any vehicle.

They do cost more, but you're paying for the integration (and the "free" 4 years of Assist). Aftermarket BT solutions have to add a mic, a screen, and controls somewhere, then you have the issue of audio integration and muting the music when calls come in, etc.
Homelink is not a big deal, but it does add a bit of security since it doesn't function unless the ignition is on. If you have a garage opener (most likely clipped to your visor), and your car is parked outside, someone can break into your car and get into your house.

It is a must have. I am surprised that BMW has not made it standard on every car. It is a great safety feature in my opinion. I won't have a car without it again

Yes worth it. I-drive or no I-drive. Bluetooth is one of those options where it would cost MORE to do it yourself after you get the car. I totally regret not getting it.
