Craziest thing I ever heard about BMWs and rims.

I called up a few BMW dealers in my area just to get a good feel about what you can and can't do to your car (circle BMW tends to be the most Mod friendly dealer in the NJ area). One service rep. (Freehold, NJ) I called told me that 19 inch rims are prone to causing air bags to deploy in the car when you hit a large pot hole. Is this true or was he BSing?

I'm no mechanic, but I thought the sensors were in the bumpers. I went over a median and sidewalk in my old Neon driving in the rain. It ripped one wheel completely off, nearly another and popped all four tires....airbag did not deploy.

Then why would BMW have 19" performance rims specifically for the 3 series?? That guy had no clue.

Exactly. I didn't even want to ask him about other mods at that point. Just ended the covo. right there.

FYI
If you got MODs then stay FAR away from Freehold BMW. (Freehold, NJ)

I've always heard bad thing about Freehold BMW (from the next town over). I stayed away from them when I was looking for my 3. Ended up getting it at Circle and they've been great so far with service.

Edit: Yea, that Rep is full of crap.

Yeah I usually go to Circle or Open Road. I got 27K miles on and the Service light is starting to come on. So I figured I might as well take it in now because there will be some heavy modding going on this Saturday. So I took off my air intake and will be taking it "stock" on Thursday.

And I'm sure as hell NOT taking it to Freehold.

+1.....that's a good one! Collision (airbag) sensors are in front bumper area.

Recently I got a low tire pressure warning (which tire!??!) and the first step was for me to buy a good tire gauge to figure out the culprit. Turns out the pressures were all consistent front to back etc. The guy at the auto parts store tells me that there may be a nail in the tire b/c the sensor can detect punctures. Oh really? Since when is a tire pressure monitoring system capable of monitoring tire integrity?!?!

I think it was just a cold night and the car sat outside and the pressures dropped. I added a few PSI to each tire back up to spec and reset the indicator--it never came back on.

Hey BMW, how about giving us actual tire pressure readouts by tire...the Corvette's had that for YEARS. Telling me I have a low tire pressure in general is barely more than useless information.

even the cheapo rental Chevy Cobalt i had told you what the actual tire pressure was. this is my first BMW. i was kind of amazed at what doesn't come standard on it.

There was a story on the news here not too long ago. This guy driving his E46 in the rain claimed that his passenger-side curtain airbag suddenly deployed for absolutely no reason while driving on the highway. BMW looked at it and denied warranty, claiming that the computer recorded that he struck a massive pothole and that's what triggered it. He had regular 16 or 17" rims though.

I did hear that they explode when the speedometer goes under 50mph.

I swear the God the guy had me dying. I think I'll call back tomorrow and ask him what he thinks about me swaping out my OEM halogens with OEM xenons.
