Craziest thing I ever heard about BMWs and rims.
I called up a few BMW dealers in my area just to get a good feel about what you can and can't do to your car (circle BMW tends to be the most Mod friendly dealer in the NJ area). One service rep. (Freehold, NJ) I called told me that 19 inch rims are prone to causing air bags to deploy in the car when you hit a large pot hole. Is this true or was he BSing?

I'm no mechanic, but I thought the sensors were in the bumpers. I went over a median and sidewalk in my old Neon driving in the rain. It ripped one wheel completely off, nearly another and popped all four tires....airbag did not deploy.

I've always heard bad thing about Freehold BMW (from the next town over). I stayed away from them when I was looking for my 3. Ended up getting it at Circle and they've been great so far with service.
Edit: Yea, that Rep is full of crap. |

Recently I got a low tire pressure warning (which tire!??!) and the first step was for me to buy a good tire gauge to figure out the culprit. Turns out the pressures were all consistent front to back etc. The guy at the auto parts store tells me that there may be a nail in the tire b/c the sensor can detect punctures. Oh really? Since when is a tire pressure monitoring system capable of monitoring tire integrity?!?! I think it was just a cold night and the car sat outside and the pressures dropped. I added a few PSI to each tire back up to spec and reset the indicator--it never came back on. Hey BMW, how about giving us actual tire pressure readouts by tire...the Corvette's had that for YEARS. Telling me I have a low tire pressure in general is barely more than useless information. |

There was a story on the news here not too long ago. This guy driving his E46 in the rain claimed that his passenger-side curtain airbag suddenly deployed for absolutely no reason while driving on the highway. BMW looked at it and denied warranty, claiming that the computer recorded that he struck a massive pothole and that's what triggered it. He had regular 16 or 17" rims though.
