BMWCCA Driving School July 5th/6th

Is anybody else doing this? I have seen tons of posts for autocross and autocross schools but nobody mention this driving school. I am interested in signing up for it but just wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with this particular driving school format and thought it was worth it.

Also, any recommendations on where I can pick up a helmet around here that meets their SA2005 requirement/which helmet to go for?

How unfortunate you need an SA2005 instead of an M2005. You're looking to spend around $300. Also, try PM'ing BMWeber as he is a track instructor. He may be able to help you.

Guys, where did you see SA2005 requirement?

Their tech inspection form clearly states Snell 2000 or newer, meaning M2000, M2005, SA2000, or SA2005.

I run the autocross events, and know that our insurance rider states we need the current model minus one, as minimum requirement. Since new certification comes every 5 years, that means 2000 and 2005 Snell ratings are sufficient (both M and SA).

Btw, the HPDS program with the chapter is awesome. It takes quite a while before they let you go solo (many events), are pretty good about grouping comparative students together, and they have pretty decent classroom sessions as well. It really is a school, more than a track event. They run a tight ship too, which means safety is the main concern, by far.

I just checked: scroll down to the "Other Requirements" section.

I was right.. M2000 or SA2000 or newer.

I'm definitely not discouraging you from buying an SA helmet, as they are safer (and you are protecting your noggin, afterall). If the SA is within your means, I would recommend it, but it is not required.

I saw the M200- and SA200- requirements but some from the sounds of the form it seems like some other places may require SA rated helmets so I figured I might as well just get the one that would cover me across more events to begin with.

I'm still debating signing up but since I don't have any formal track experience I guess for my $90 novice discount rate it is pretty hard to pass up...

You gotta start some time. Might as well take advantage of the discount.

You also may want to get a M2005 now, for <$100, and if you really like doing driving events, pony up to a SA2010 next year, which will get you through the 2020 season.
