Lightbulb Computer indication for first oil change - what was your reading?

Hi all,

I've had my 330 E90 since the 24th of March and it has roughly
9600 miles so far. I changed the oil at 1300 and then at 6000 miles
and now the onboard computer says the first scheduled change
is in 10000 miles. I am interested to know what was/is the reading
of the obc of others when they did their first change based on the
computer. Please also indicate whether you have done any oil
changes yourself prior to the scheduled one.

Thx,

sc.-

please note, your obc says 10000 MORE miles, not at 10000 miles

my dealer does my oil, at scheduled intervals only (once so far at 20K miles)

Are you sure about it???
I cannot imagine that in the beginning it said 15k, now, with almost 10k miles on it it says 10k??? I mean, isn't that crazy to change the oil once every 20k miles in TX at 100 degrees every day for past 3 months???

Mines is down to 4700 miles to go. I have just under 14K miles and I paid for my own at about 7000 miles.

In fact I should be at the 15K mark in less than a month to qualify for my 1st freebie.

Suggestion to group: when spending ~$40k on a technologically complex hunk o' hardware, I humbly recommend that you RTFM!

I'm a BMW tech: pay attention!

Your E90 needs a free maintenance Oil Change every 15000 vehicle miles, less if you drive hard. if it reads, for instance, 19000 vehicle miles when your oil change is due, THAT IS A PROBLEM. go to the dealer, complain. We will give your car the oil change that is due, reprogram the DME (engine computer) to read oil change every 15k, and let you on your way!

GO TO THE DEALER! FIX IT! don't cause extra wear and tear on that awesome engine.

I plan to do once a year at least, since I probably won't hit 15000 miles. Car is 6 months old and I have about 6000 miles on it. I think it says 13000 miles left to oil change; when new it said 18000 miles. So for me it will be more like once a year / ~12k miles

you get a free change at 1 year from last service if you don't get there based on mileage. At this service they will not reset your service interval computer.

On my Z4, I ended up getting a 1 year oil change and then 4 months later got another free service when the indicator called for it. Next service will be 1 year from the last free one.

Ward,

Did you go back to the same dealer for the second oil change 4 months later? Didn't their record show that you just had a free scheduled oil change 4 months ago?

I am in the same situation. Had 1 year free oil change with 4000 miles to go but the dealership didn't reset the service interval.

interval update as I'm probably one of the higher mileage cars on the board

had the initial oil change at about 18K miles

Inspection 1 is reading 2500 miles to go (would be at 30K)
next oil service is reading 8000 miles to go (38k)

so as I pile on the miles, the service intervals seem to be getting shorter......

and luongo the same dealer changed my oil in my Z4 twice in 4 months free of charge both times

Im up there with you on the miles 32k this week. I had my Inspection 1 done at 30k and they did not change my oil and my next oil service is showing about 40k miles its all about your gas milage the better gas milage you get the longer it is between oil changes.

My oil change history
5k me
10k me
15k me
22k dealer
30k me
35k will be me
40k will be dealer

I dont get it - why are people doing their own oil changes before scheduled intervals? I was under the impression these machines didnt need it before the 15k - so why spend the time and money doing so?

For me its all about piece of mind and im planing on keeping this car for 200k miles if it lasts that long and do the oil changes my-self just like on my E46 and its still running like new after 120k miles. I use Mobil-1 5w-30 and a OEM filter it costs me $39 and 20 min of my time.

Hehe...the Castrol oil they use is a blended synthetic and is not up to the duty of 15K+ intervals. Used oil analysis' prove this already as it did with the E46's.

Also some of the BMW's built in the past 6 years that have racked up high miles with 15k oil changes are having sludge buildup. Oil changes are cheap and the BMW oil is good for ~7.5k miles depending on driving conditions. If you want to learn a whole lot about oil go to www.bobistheoilguy.com

Just to let you know the Mobil 1 5w30 is not LL-01 approved due to the fact it's a very thin 30 weight. If you want to stick with recommended oils then Mobil 1 0w40, Castrol 0w30 (only @ select Autozone's), and BMW 5w30 are readily available.

Yes I know that thats why I change it so often, LL= long life = sludge in 60 or 100k miles I have used Mobil 1 in my E46 and all of my other cars and never had a issue and i tend to keep a car for 10 years or 150k to 200k miles. No sludge in my motors.

I agree 100% if your going to keep it change the oil if not then let BMW change it and it will be the next owners problem. I will never buy a used or CPO BMW.
