Hey folks,
SO over the past three weeks I've been getting an idiot light lighting up when I try to start the car. Looks like a yellow steering wheel with a padlock on it. At first, I assumed it meant the steering wheel lock was on and I just needed to wiggle the steerng wheel to tart the car. Seemed to happen infrequently, and I could never figure out what made it light up one day and not the next. Well last night he idiot light came on, but in RED. So now I dragged outthe old manual and looked up the meaning of the light. STEERING WHEEL LOCK MALFUNCTION. DO OT DRIVE CAR. RISK OF WHEEL LOCKING WHILE DRIVING.

So I took the car in this am and my SA told me he's has four-five cars with similar complaint. HAd to replace a part in the steering column... could take a week.

SA calls me later this evening and says I have to replace the whole steering column (as per NJ BMW) because my car is an MT.

ANybody else having this issue? Get it checked out soon. Maybe a recall in the future?

Hey, i had the same issue a while back but it hasn't happened again in a few months...how old is your car?

bought: 12/05
driven: 9000 miles

got it back today... they had to replace the whole steering column. No issuus thus far. I have noticed the "audible lock sound" is distinctly different than it had been before the repair; much quieter/subdued.
