Slow drivers on I-5 and I-90

I've only been here for about a month, but nonetheless, I have noticed that people tend to drive 60mph on the fast lane of the highway. Everytime I try to go to Renton or Bellevue, there are cars lined up on the lane next to the HOV going 60mph. Is that the norm for Pacific NW?

Yes - may as well get used to it I moved here from L.A. where 80 was slow in the right lane and folks here just run at a different speed.

There's no rush really, going 30min and any compass direction from Seattle and you're pretty much in the boonies. 30min in any direction in L.A. and you're still knee deep in L.A. no matter how hard you try.

Just remember to plan your trip so you're not on 405 around 4-7 lol.

I see. Thanks for the info. I came from Boston and it was a pretty small town (geographic-wise), but people do drive faster on the Pike (I-90 out there). I think I'll be fine driving a Honda Fit in Seattle for the next 5 years then, while I finish my medical training.

Yep, the Seattle Metro area is "Keep LEFT except to pass." Generally the right lane is much faster. Thankfully the state law allows for passing on the right when there are two or more lanes traveling the same direction.

You will notice that people will merge on (rather slowly) then immediately get into the left lane. Also, I think many retards, er, Seattle-ites, think it is their responsibility to monitor and manage YOUR speed. In other words, if they are in the "fast" lane doing about the speed limit, then there is clearly no need for you to go any faster. Very frustrating.

The key is to scare 'em out of the way. Accelerate to as fast a speed as possible until you get right up on their ass then slam on the brakes! That should urge them to move into compliance with the law (and out of the left lane).

I like how everyone is calling "them drivers" ...like none of you ever f*** up or drive slow, BMW drivers i guess are all pros. Its not really how people drive here, its what state laws and state patrol allows around here. Guy posting about LA, speed limits are slightly higher down there in most places and their state patrol is letting people go 80+...unfortunately here anything over 70 will get you a ticket.

I agree with you on the speed ..where speeds over 70 could get you a ticket but in my opinion, your wrong about the way people drive here....they drive like Fu_kin' idiots!

**note** I drive an average of 130 miles a day around the puget sound area. I've seen a hell of a lot of morons on the road!

I don't care how fast your going ....if your in the left lane and there is a faster car behind you....MOVE OVER! It's the law!!!! Some states give tickets for being in the "Passing Lane" I believe Washington has an RCW with the left hand lane being a passing lane but the trooper don't enforce it here.

So mookster, I suggest you know what your talking about before you offend us "BMW pro drivers".

Ok, point taken. Look at it this way, you're basically offending me by calling people that drive here idiots, cuz those same people that drive here could be my family members, my relatives or friends or could be your own...see where I'm going with this....

Moving onto the second part of your statement regarding left lane, yes its a law but then again its what this state enforces and tolerates. Cops here dont enforce left lane rule all that often and tolerate slow drivers in the left lane, again this all falls on our police and what they enforce.

I think you being to sensitive to the comments here. Of course, I'm not calling all drivers idiots just the one driving slow on the left lane of a highways and other idiot driving moves like turning left in the far right lanes.....I can go on an on.

Regardless of who it is ...your relatives or mine the bottom line is that the people who does this, especially the ones on the freeway, are creating a very dangerous and deadly situations on the roads ...and they are IDIOTS.

I've lost a family member last year due to these same idiots on the road.

What's really fu*cked up is that troopers let semi's drive in the left lane and a LOT of that happens in all the city limits here.
Once, I even saw a trooper pass a semi on the right when the truck was in the left lane!

Mookster, I'm not trying to bust your balls. I understand where your coming from. I really didn't like that BMW comment......and that's what got me started. I myself enjoy my rsx typeS just as much as my E90

See, i knew we would finally get on the same page, it is all about what the state will enforce and allow. Is this kinda driving dangerous? Sure, i ride a motorcycle and spend all my time in the left lane so i know how it is.

Fine, you can call people IDIOTS You Happy Now?

Speaking of Rsx Type S, that was my previous car...yes i do miss VTEC...

Rcw 46.61.100 states: (4) It is a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic. Unfortunately this law is in no way enforced. It takes nutjob vigilantes like myself who are willing to put in the time and effort to usher these inconsiderate drivers out of the left lane. Two wrongs don't make a right, but getting in front of someone going 60 in the left lane and letting off the gas until they remove themselves usually does the trick and hopefully sends the message that what they are doing is wrong. It may slow your commute down by 30 seconds or so, but I believe it could make Seattle a better place for us all.

I-405 north of Bellevue is always congested with these self-righteous bastards doing 60 mph in the fast lane. Like already said, they won't move over no matter what you do. Just get a tint job and use the HOV lanes for passing. I use the HOV lanes all the time and have yet to be pulled over. It's much safer to pass using the HOV lane than navigating through the slow lanes trying to get around these idiots.

welcome to the seattle area. i lived there for three (3) years and yes, that is the norm. it was a big change when i moved here in the bay area where the slowest vehicle is 10 + mph above the speed limit.

I will laugh when I drive by and see you pulled over by the WASP for HOV violation getting a $500 ticket.

Yes, drivers here are annoying and drive me crazy to no end. However, it doesn't help if people drive like douches to compete with the idiots.
