What grade engine oil for the 330d?

I need to put a drop in before my 3000 mile trip around France & the UK, but the manual just says "your service centre will be able to advise you". Wow, that's a lot of help on a Saturday afternoon.

Anyone know?

Well that can be a problem. I just changed my oil a week or so ago and it went well! Very dirty at 6k. When you say a drop does it tell you that you need to add a quart? If the bar indicator is still visible and you can see where it is and where the MAX level is then you just need to add a little at a time. I think 25% of a quart will be ok until you drive it a day and then check the fluid since the level needs to adjust before adding more. I put in 7 quarts already and it still just says OK. So I'm putting in even less until it says MAX and a date/mileage readout. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Diesel engines have a dipstick to test the level manually (I believe the gas engines have dispensed with this?). According to the manual, the difference between the minimum & maximum on said stick is 1 litre, so I am looking to add 500cc. I am not sure which oil to buy, however...

I didn't even see that you were in Europe. Yeah, they did away with the dipstick but you are correct with the liter reading. As far as which oil to buy..I put in 5W-30 Mobile one.

BMW's Long Life-2001 (LL-01) approved oils are BMW 5w30 (really a group III blended synthetic); Mobil 1 0w40 (group IV full synthetic); Castrol 0w30 and Lubro Moly 5w30 (group III blended synthetic).

Some good info I found regarding oil levels and how long before it registers.

The sensor "works out" the oil amount, it doesnt just measure it like a dipstick.

It requires about 50 seconds of engine on to give you a "initial reading", and will give you a proper "full reading" after 5 minutes of driving. It then updates about every 20min
