I take it you've never been before? Hawaii is a collection of islands. Which are you planning on visiting? Wife and I will be on Oahu and then Kauai from April 30th to May 12th. Been to all 4 of the major islands and each has a different vibe. Depends on what you want to do.

i worked with this one dude, who went to Hawaii on his honeymoon. asked him what island and he goes "oh, we are going to Maui, but will just drive between the islands. They have bridges there, right?"

These prices are too good to be true. Airfare alone is $480/round trip from San Diego. If you want to stay some place half-way decent its going to be at least $150/night. And trust me, there are some really REALLY bad hotels there...

With an under $400 package you are pretty much guaranteed to stay in some old dump.

no, it's not too good to be true. you can price it out and see for yourself. deals like these DO exist. yeah the cheapest deals are dump 1 star hotels. if you want a 3 star hotel you're looking at the $500 range but still, $500/person for 6 nights plus air in a 3 star hotel is cheap.

i went during memorial day weekend a few years back when the economy wasn't so crappy. under $500/person for 5 days 4 nights (3 star hotel) and non-stop air.

I have a honeymoon planned in Maui in August but the airfares are kinda high...$800+ for JFK-LAX-OGG.

Read the company newsletter and it shows HI is struggling now due to the economy.

You'll have an awesome time! Which island are you planning to visit?

I definitely recommend this series of books: http://www.wizardpub.com/oahu/oahu.html
They have one for each island and it covers a lot of spots that are must see. There are so many that you can't possibly see everything, but choose the ones they recommend. You'll have a great time.

I'm staying at the Waikiki Marriott. Any specific I shouls sight see or any events I should attend? It will be during Memorial Day weekend so we might roll by Pearl Harbor.

Oh, and should I rent a car? I figured it will be busy during that weekend to find parking.

You should get a car.

Snorkling at Hanauma Bay (closed Tuesdays)
Hike Diamond Head (good photo opps at the top)
Drive to the North Shore and get some shrimp from Romy's Shrimp Shack
Attend a Luau (I think Germains at the Ihilani is recommended or the Polynesian Cultural Center for the overall experience)
Walk around Waikiki (a given)
Swim Waikiki Beach
Pearl Harbor/Mighty Mo (if you're into that, will be crowded though as you said)
Dole Plantation (get some pineapple)
Punchbowl Memorial (I think they set little flags out on every grave, nice sight)

It's early and I haven't had coffee yet, so if anything else pops into my head I'll post it.

While you are in Haleiwa, go to Haleiwa Joe's and order Moi. This is THE best fish i have EVER had. Their Ahi Poke is also REALLY good.

And watch out for the cops. There is usually a couple of them sitting around Haleiwa and Wiamea Bay area.

Aoki's, about a block away, is better and the line is shorter If you get a rental car, look for Waiola Shave Ice, better than all of them.

When you get to baggage at the airport, look for 101 things to do. They have one for every island. They pretty much cover all of the tourist stuff. Unless you are looking for something out of the ordinary, it should suffice. Rent a car and go to Aloha stadium. Open on Wed and weekends. There you will find all of your gifts to buy. Or you can stay downtown and ask directions for International market. Gotta do the shark dive in North Shore. Sky dive at Dillingham airfield is spectacular over the ocean. Nothing like it! Plenty of stuff to do just depends on what you want. Find Lanikai Beach for quite, white beach and clearwater. Not too crowded! Let me know if you have something in mind. Good luck!

I just booked 2 events last night off Priceline.com.

Hanauma Bay Snorkeling Adventure Half-Day Tour
Polynesian Cultural Center: Twilight Package

We're only staying for 4 days so I don't want to book too many events where we'll have to worry about making it on time.

I also rented a car for 22 bucks a day. Probably hit up the China town there and do some shopping where ever.

HARD? NOT AT ALL....there may be a line but thats about it...we have about 2 'upscale clubs' if you want to call them that- pearl and level 4. they are the closest to a vegas style club youll get here..all other clubs are subpar, but still ok. if you wanna get dressed up go to pearl, its at ala moana shopping center, the best mall we have..and it actually is a very good mall from what malls ive seen on the mainland. it has everything from high end- gucci, louis, yves, prada, tiffany, fendi, salvatore, her mes, channel etc etc etc to your basics polo, lacoste, footlocker, champs, neiman, macys, nordst rom.

You could non-rev it. Risky, but possible.

Cheers,

Just got back from my two week honeymoon there. Things are expensive, got be real careful if money is a concern. As far as what to see? Get a series of tourist books called "Hawaii Discovered". There is Maui Revealed, Big Island Revealed, Kauai Revealed, etc. They are the bible but will give you a good overview.

There is so much to do on each and every Island. We stayed only a day on Oahu @ the Sheraton @ Waikiki Beach. It was ok, but the whole area was just so overdone. We only stayed there to go sea Pearl, then we were off the next day to the Big Island, a week there and then a week in Kauai. If I was going back to Oahu, I would spend all my time on the North Shore.

PM if you got questions....

Oh, and definitely rent a car.

Cheers,
e46e92
