What's there to do in Hollywood?

besides go to Universal Studios.

Any other "tourist" type stuff for those visiting the first time? My gf is visiting from out of town in a couple weeks and she wants to go to Hollywood. It will be a short trip. Probably fly in on a fri early morning and spend Friday and Sat there and fly back Sat evening. Although i went to school in Riverside, I rarely went to LA. I would go to San Diego most of the time on my free weekends. Thanks for any suggestions/ideas.

Hollywood is where the nightlife is at in LA at the moment.

Touristy stuff is abound during the day : Hollywood + Highland (w/ its street scene all around) , Mann's Chinese Theater, Rippley's Believe or Not Museum, etc.

Night Life : A smorgasbord of fine places to eat, bars, lounges and night clubs. I recommend Katsuya and Social Hollywood (restaurant and club)

Also, travel a couple of blocks north and you hit the Sunset Strip on West Hollywood w/ more choices.

Hmm ok. I'm sure we will want to go check out that hollywood sign so I'll have to look up how to get there for picture taking. I doubt we will be doing the whole nightlife bar/lounge thing at night but rather look for some good places to eat. So most of the stuff will be done during the day. Sounds like Hollywood blvd and Sunset Blvd are the places to check out. Thanks for the suggestions. If there's any more let me know thanks!

When you say "Hollywood", where exactly do you mean? Because Hollywood can be either very nice or a complete shithole.

ahhh that's good to know. I was looking at some vacation packages that include flight, hotel and rental car and it's been giving me some spots close to Universal Studios. I would ideally like to stay in that "touristy" area where we wouldnt have to drive far so we could do a lot of walking. So I guess the Universal Studios area? Is there spots we should avoid? We want to be as efficient as possible since we only have a day and a half

If that's the case, you may want to check into staying at Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa. It's right behind Hollywood + Highland complex and within walking distance of all touristy spots in Hollywood :

Hollywood sign: http://www.seeing-stars.com/Landmark...woodSign.shtml

Google the intersection of Arrowhead Dr & Canyon Lake Dr. You'll see a large green patch, where there's a park people go to. But just south of that, at the large bend in the road is a great place to see the sign... it's the closest you can get to it. Getting there is kind of tricky, i definitly suggest you have a gps, cause the roads are wicked narrow and they can be tough to follow. But that is the best place to see and take pics of the sign...

Universal studios is in burbank, that's a fairly nice area. it's not technically really "Hollywood", but it's where quite a few studios are. NBC, Universal, Warner Bros.

If you want to do a studio tour I'd really suggest you do the Warner Bros. tour. I used to work there and I loved walking around the lot because of all the crazy random things you would encounter. One day I ran into the girl who plays the Terminator on Sarah Connor Chronicles and the new Batmobile. Another day I ran into America's Best Dance Crew (all of them, I guess) and had lunch with them. Besides that there are a lot of famous movie sets and whatnot.

Universal City Walk is also kind of cool.

In Hollywood proper there is the Kodak Theater, Ripley's, the wax museum, and lots of porn shops and tranny hookers.

On the Sunset Strip there are a lot of good restaurants and on a Thurs - Sat night you'll see a parade of exotic cars.

On Melrose you'll see a lot of popular fashion shops (BAPE, etc) and more sick cars.

I would suggest staying west of Highland Ave and north of Pico unless you're interested in pawn shops or joining a gang.

lol great info man thanks. i'll make sure i stay west of highland and north of Pico. Man I can't believe imma look like a Japanese tourist although I was born and raised in california. I just booked our flight and we're staying at the Renaissance as suggested earlier. Still have a couple weeks to plan so I'll try to take some notes from everyone's input here. Hopefully we can fit everything in. We'll be arriving fri morning at 8 and leaving saturday at 6pm. Thanks for everyone who contributed so far.

LAWL I live near Pinks, there is always a huge line. Even in the middle of the night. People crave that wiener.
