535d versus 330d
I was curious to see how a 330d (E90) would compare to a 535D (E60)The following is an article I found from a NZ car magazine - makes good reading...assuming you are 330d driver!

Good article. For me it was a tough decision between a 535d Sport and 330d M-Sport. Got the 330d in the end and kinda glad I did.

Simiple. 5 series is just not pretty except head on- great mean look that way. I wanted one, couldn't get past the trunk styling. SO glad the 3 series wasn't done in the same fashion.

Can't wait to get my 330d remapped to 285hp & 610Nm... should be able to take on a few M3s

Well I tried a remapped 330d and a remapped 535d, the 330d was pushing 280bhp and 600nm and the 535d was pushing 340bhp and 680nm.
The 330d would do 0-60mph in around 6.3seconds, well this was the best time we got, and the 535d did it in 5.6seconds, but the real difference was the 0-100mph, the 330d did it in 17.2seconds where as the 535d got there in 13.6seconds, so considerably quicker. The other thing that really stood out was how much better the braking was on the 535d, didn't realise to be fair until we got in the 330d, so if you are thinking of upgrades then this is definitley worth considering, round the twisties good brakes up the enjoyment levels as much as speed imho. One thing that really surprised us was how much more chuckable the 535d felt, there is a road near me with a smal hump back bridge followed by a very sharp right bend just after it, at anything over 40mph the 330d would loose the back end and skip across the road, where as even at 50mph it still grips like mad. As I said this really, really surprised us as we thought the slightly bigger 5 would loose out in this area. We then realised my mate still has run flats on his car, where as I have changed to Pirelli P Zero Rossos, a few weeks later he swapped over and put some P Zero Neros on his and now it grips and handles far, far better. If anything his m-sport suspension is now far too soft, ah well, always nice to have an upgrade in the pipeline! Overall the cars are surprisingly similar in the handling department, however the 3 does not have as good steering feedback and it is also noticably slower, it feels a little sluggish to me and my mate can't wait for a 335d to come along and says he will change as soon as he can. Both are great cars, but there is a difference in price, his was £34k with the toys where as mine was £50k. If I was buying again and the 335d was available I think that would be my choice, don't need the extra space and I really like the E91 M-sport styling, just the 330d wasn't quite quick enough for me. |

Interesting feedback. I agree the 335d is going to be fantastic, especially when remapped to 680Nm (holy cr@p!! ). The only problem I can see then is the theoretical possibility of a V8 345d which by my calculations, with BMW's inevitable bi-annually uprated engine + 3rd party remapping, would be good for about 400hp and 900Nm* At this rate, manufacturers are soon going to have to replace the rear tyres with a single roller that runs the entire width of the car
* or only 350 off the Bugatti Veyron

Well the V8 4.5 diesel is coming to the 6 series as a 645d so I expect to see it in the 5er shortly after, however the problem I have as the diesel engines get bigger is the fuel consumption. I get 27mpg from my 535d, I can get 37mpg on a run but after a few weeks it always ends up back at 27mpg so this is the figure I really get, and I get 21mpg from an M3, now I would expect to get 24mpg from the newer 3.0 engine including the 335i. So when does diesel stop becoming attractive?
I would think a 335d would be tuneable to 330bhp and 650nm, and a 335i should tune to around 390bhp and 550nm. This would give real world figures on the 0-60mpg of about 5.4seconds on the 535d and 4.9seconds on the 335i, and 0-100 of 13.3 for the 535d and probably around 12ish for the 335i. Now for the sake of 3 or 4 mpg I think I would take the petrol! |

330d AUT E90 didn't make me feel good in the testdrive. Very silent though.
335d(DMS) will be a blast, though I 'hate' the autobox, but I know the torque probs and the resale blabla. My former E46 5MT 330d was a great car overall. And I heard someting about the facelifted X3 with the 3.0SD engine with 286 instead of 272(535dA)BHP as standard (EU DIN HP) |

The 535d in stock form is OK, but once it is remapped to 350bhp and 700nm of torque it is absolutely something else, a truly stunny car. |

I reckon the 335i will be the one to have though, the sequential turbo on the 3.0d is not very economical, when I go out and enjoy the 535d I can get sub 20mpg easily, and that is UK gallons not US.
The Petrol will be sweater sounding, better revving and more importantly alot less nose heavy, plus I bet it returns nearly the same MPG. |
