I say it's about time. I'd rather the factory do it than any dealer.

Alarm systems should be able to send you an e-mail/sms alert/robotic phone call with the exact intrusion alert (i.e. unauthorized driver's side door access; window broken; battery disconnect; you get the point). I don't understand why these things are stuck so far back in the 70's and yet people continue to pay good money for them.

Interesting idea, but it would require a persistent cell carrier service plan, probably around $30/mo. (I know it could be made to be cheaper, like Tmo2Go for around $20/year, but those arrangements would be squirrelly at best, not something we could expect BMW to offer).

Indeed what you are talking about is pretty close to what OnStar can do (and more), and it is in fact $20-30/mo. Would you pay that for what you are talking about?

If they wrapped it in with the whole concierge / in-car Internet, then sure, I would pay for it. As a stand-alone option, I still might pay for it but I'd have to give it a bit more thought, but I think a very acceptable price point for stand-along pricing would be around $50/year. Over the lifetime of a car, that's some pretty good coin for BMW, especially since the system won't even be used all that much (hopefully).

I don't think this would be hard to do for BMW, since they already have the BMWAssist system.

At one point, ADT or one of those home security systems was trying to market some product that monitored your car and alerted you if there was a break-in.

I ordered mine in my 09 335xi, but no idea on price yet. I should know the price in the next couple of days.

I just got back from a moonlight hike at Griffith Park (the major urban park in Los Angeles). I parked my car in the lot next to a newish Honda Accord. When I got back down about two hours later, there were red lights flashing all over the place and a couple SUVs were parked around my car.

the Accord got jacked! They stole it right out of the lot. My car, however, was not touched.

Maybe it was the blinking clow nose, maybe it was other theft determent features, but I'm damn lucky the E91 is so hard to steal.

Oooh, Griffith Park, I've had some, uh, times up there.

Glad your car didn't get touched, but I highly doubt it was the alarm.

Well, either way, it is a mental thing. But, when I saw the flashing lights the first thing I thought was "Thank goodness I made the dealer throw in that damn alarm...."

Wow dude, you certainly dodged the bullet on that one! Park under street lights!

Then again, they might not have wanted a wagon

My wife digs wagons. Our next car (to replace the truck and the Mini) will most likely be a wagon (or a Lexus RX; I know, kill me now).

You have probably never lived in Europe (I did for quite some time). There, wagons have kind of this air of being cool and almost chic.

In any case, the E91 is not a typical wagon. It looks about as sleek as a wagon can get.
