Place to repair RFT in Bay Area?
I'm at 900 miles and I got a flat last night in emeryville.
Anyone know a place in the east bay to get a RFT repaired? Or will I need to get a new tire? The nail is back left, and its right in the middle... |

Take it to the dealer. Weatherford is close to Emeryville.

Even if you find a place that claims to be able to repair them, most folk recommend against using repaired RFT tire because when you get a flat, the sidewalls may be compromised as a result and the reinforced sidewalls are the vital components behind what makes a RFT tire a RFT tire.

Luckily, no air is leaking right now...the nail is just lodged in there.
Weatherford said to call around and see if anyone will patch it. I can't seem to get anyone to do it. |

Asiann is right - if the sidewalls have not been compromised you can just plug it. I plugged my tire once when it had a nail in it - it had not air pressure left inside the tire and I imagine your tire should have no air pressure left inside as well. Like Asiann said, these plugs can be had at an shop including Wal-Mart.

I don't know about your runflat, but Rouse Tires on Harrison (in downtown Oakland) is a fabulous place to patch regular tires & buy new ones. I've been going there for many years; they have my highest recommendation.
Is it too late to buy tire insurance?

Just stay away from G. Oren (Sp?) tires on the corner of 14th Ave. and International (E.14th). I took my Prelude in there one time for a balance, took the car on the freeway and the steering wheel just about snaps my wrists off. Come to find out the guy didnt tighten my bolts, they almost came off!

I agree with Asiann - I carry a plug kit as well as a portable air compressor in my car...if I ever do get a flat, my plan is to find a safe spot off the road and do the necessary repairs without putting excessive mileage on the punctured tire.....

a plug is never the right way to fix a tire. a plug is never 100% as you have to make a bigger hole into the tire thus compromising rigidity even more so. my tire shop/co. will not fix a runflat for liability reasons. you cant tell if they have been damaged or not b/c they are so stiff. they are very expensive, this is true, but if you find a place to patch it, do it. don't plug guys...

Ok - so I am out in the middle of Texas, no spare, and no one has RFT's in stock....I think I will put the plug in and get the car home.....and you do not have to make a larger hole - that is nonsense....

a plug is ok to get the car home, but not for permanent fixes. your better off replacing it. ive only been part of the tire industry all of my life but thats how our stores do it. we dont plug tires, we patch, and plugged tires cannot be patched afterwards. not all places will fix a run flat

Thanks man....I went to firestone in Oakland...they said they could patch up a run flat...went in and they said they didn't have time...so I made an appointment...this morning, the guy says "sorry, we don't do run flats"
I explained to him that I made the appointment specifically for the RFT... he said "no sorry, you have to buy a new tire...we don't repair it" I'm gonna head over to hayward asap... |

I think its BS that you cant patch a run flat. I think its more that people are greedy and see a way to milk the consumer for more money. If i get a nail in the middle of my RFT i find it hard to believe that they cannot patch it. Now if you drive too much on it i can see the arguement but if you get a flat and take it as soon as you can with as little milage as possible i cannot see the danger in patching it. It all smells like BS to me..
