SNOW TIRES

I was wondering.

The people who change to snow tires, do you:

A. change to snow RFTs (is there such a thing?)?
B. change to regular snow tires and have a spare snow tire?
C. change to regular snow tires and don't carry a spare?

Neither live in Hawaii! Sorry! I would just get snow tires on a different set of rims if it were me!

Or just use your existing stock RFTs for winter. That is what I would/will do

From what others have posted and depending on where you live that is not always the case.

A: Yes there is... Dunlop M3 Winter Sport DSST works great

I could go on forever into my views on the whole RFT debate that goes on but I wont. I'll just say that if the situation that RFT naysayers use, of the RFT(s) being so destroyed the car is undrivable, ever happens I guarantee I will have much more to worry about than how soon I can get home that day.

I think we've covered the RFTs that come with the 162's=death trap in snow, enough already

I change to regular winter sets after thanksgiving and remove them around April some time. I use one of my summers as a spare in the trunk and vice versa during summer.

You have an XI, maybe you dont need a spare set,
Doesnt the XI come with all season RFT?

My XI came with performance RFT's... I got the sport package + $300 extra to get the 161's. And I'm in CA, so I guess no all-seasons. I'm planning on getting wheels, and putting dunlop M3's on the stock rims for the snowboarding season. I dunno if it's a good idea to run staggered on a snow setup though... we'll see how it goes come winter time.

Guys I need a final answer once and for all. First of all I know wide tires don't do well in snow but I don't care. I want to get a second set of 161's for winter so my car looks the same all year round.

1) Is it a really BAD idea to run a staggered setup in winter?
2) Are there winter runflats available in the standard tire sizes found on 161's? ie 17" 225's front and 255's rear.

I would really appreciate a definitive answer because I want to finalize this now so I am not scrambling in the fall like everyone else.

The answer is.

You should have bought an XI.

You're in CANADA!!!

1. No it is not bad, but it won't give you the greatest traction. If you are like me and spend more time on dry, cold roads than snow, you might stick with the stock staggered setup for better dry road performance. If you see alot of snow and want the greatest snow grip a narrower rear tire would be better.

2. Currently, no. Only in a 225 size - Dunlop M3 Dssts as have been mentioned.

I have 162's (18"), run the stock wheel/tire size setup with winter tires and use a mobility kit in the trunk for flat protection. Works like a charm. Rides much better too-its like a whole different car.
