Did you check your alignment? This is after your mishap, right? Does the shimmy occur at a particular road speed?

Ok you've done balancing and alignment and you said that you've always had this problem. My first inclination is to suggest you put on your stock tires/wheels and let the dealer sort it out, it could be a warranty issue (suspension?). Is your suspention stock? My other inclination is to bring your wheels/tires to another installer/tire shop with a different machine. Your description definitely sounds like balancing problem...

If the shimmy pops up at a specific speed and then goes away, it is almost always a tire that is out of balance. If it's constant from initial roll out, or suddenly pops up, magnifies at a certain speed then dials back but still can be felt, it's probably a bad rim or a bent rim. Good luck, don't despair. You have a helluva warranty to fall back on.

Could be the tire since they are not perfect and can have blemishes and other deformities. Have them balance each tire on the car and not on the machine. They have this machine that will spin the tire on the car and you can tell where the problems lies if it is the rim or tire. When I worked for a tire company in my teens we had to do this sometimes. Really good at finding the problem and more accurate than the regular wheel balance machine. Are you using weights on the inside and taped?

1. Bubble on inner sidewalls of front and rear tires. 2. Incorrect toe-in/out on front wheels 3. Make sure you have hubcentric rings for your rims. (if you dont have these, its a no-brainer) 4. If you have the time, replace the front 2 wheels with your stock ones and see if the shimmy is there. Do it again by replacing only the back ones with stock. 5. Some tire shops are idiots when it comes to balancing. Are you using stick on weights? Even if its off by a little, it will cause a shake. 6. Get up to cruising speed (60-80mph) and coast in neutral. Is the shimmy still there? Does it appear when you put it back in gear and accelerate? 7. Slightly bent (even by millimeters) Control arm. It doesnt take much force to damage these. Let us know. Hopefully we can diagnose. |

I've had the same problem many times before, and I also get very frustrated since most mechanics arent as particular about the car as I am.
Everytime I solved it by going to a high-end tire shop, telling the problem, and making sure they use the best balancing machine possible. I would try Wheel Warehouse in Anaheim. Or, find an upscale shop in Bakersfield to do it for you. You'll have to pay for the balancing again, but it will be worth it. |

If you've got aftermarket wheels, make *SURE* they don't need hubcentric rings. The wheels will balance up fine, but then when you put them on the car you'll get vibrations.
Long time ago there was much discussion about shimmy, search should pull up a lot of posts but I don't remember anybody ever coming up with a real cause/solution. Also, take the car to a local speed shop, one that prepares cars for track days. Check for a local PCCA chapter and see who they use to prep their cars ... been my experience porsche car club tracks their cars more than most everybody else. They'll most likely balance wheels a lot better than your local tire shop where the monkey just throws it on the balancer and slaps a weight on it. You'll want a road force balance also. In the meantime check to make sure a wheel doesn't have a bunch of weights slapped on it. That's a sure sign that something's wrong with the wheel/tire or they didn't balance it right. Unfortunately the crisp steering means you're going to pick up vibrations easier, which means everything has to be spot on. If you've got your stock wheels slap those back on and see if the shimmy is still there. It's also possible that the tire tread is setting up a nasty harmonic in the suspension. I've seen some cheap tires (nitto, etc) do some funky things. I also see mention of an "incident". BMW's are notorious for having front control arm bushings be the weak link. Usually they expire after 50-60k miles, but I've heard of them dying after taking a heavy hit. The symptoms of control arm bushing failure are clunking when turning, going over speed bumps or ... shimmy at highway speeds and under braking. You may take it to the dealer (if you they're not mod-unfriendly) and ask them to check out the shimmy, and mention that you'd like them to check for play in the control arm bushings. Good luck, nothing more infuriating than steering wheel shimmy. |
