Automatic Gearbox Stick

Is it still the old one like on 3 series or is it the new one like in the 5 series?

It's that stupid beer tap-looking abomination. No word yet on whether BMW will offer a lighted Budweiser tap as an accessory. I'm sure the aftermarket will jump in if they don't.

Any news on this by now???

When using the Swiss and Spanisch configurators and choose for the 6speed sportautomatic for a S23i or S30i you see the same stick as the one for the S35i... But the pictures from Detroit and Washington tell a different story... so which one is it now???

Sadly this was confirmed by my dealer today... so I'm not sure if I'm going for the manual or auto... To be honest I think it looks a bit stupid... as if it comes from another car...

I ordered my Z4 sDrive23i with the automatic gearbox last month.
I guess it should be posible to put the new stick(from 5 SERIES) on it!?
cheers:

I was in Bornem and had a test drive with a 635d (with that same gearbox and the beautiful gearstick!). It was a real pleasure to drive with this automatic, it handles really well... Therefore I wanted to change my order yesterday (a month ago I ordered initially with the MT) but the "beertap" puts me off a bit... My dealer also asked if it would be possible to change the handle but in Bornem they were not so keen on that. Maybe there is a difference in the electronic layout... anyone one this?

do you know if the 6 gear one offered on 23 and 30 is recommendable ? never had automatic gearbox on bmw, so dont know how good they are. seems that bmw also announces lower consumption for both automa.gearboxes on z4 , in particular for city drive.

I believe they work completely differently so the gear sticks wouldn't be interchangeable.

The gearbox of the 30i automatic transmission and the gearbox of the 35i DKG do work completely differently.
But the sportautomatic gearbox from the 5 and 6 series is the same as the one in the sDrive30i automatic, so I think it should be possible to switch the stick with one of those. I'm not sure, though.

The shift handle will become second nature and should not factor in on a buying decision. Have operated the 'new' style auto shift-handle and can say it takes about 2 seconds to understand it and get used to it.

In the new full catalogue which you can download from the german BMW-site there are pictures of the different gearboxes. I really can"t understand why they decided to put this old peace of junk in such a beautifully designed interior...

there is a new automatic by bmw that came with 335 when it came out; it shifts 50% faster and blips the throttle; I drove it and it was pretty nice. The 328 gets the GM auto tranny which is slower shifting.

If you are referring to the picture in the configurator: The picture is somehow distorted. The stick is not that high in reality (at least I did not have the impression when seeing it).

However, I also can't understand why BMW would go for the old stick in 23i and 30i (well, I know why they do it - to push sales for the 35i but it is still lame)

True, in real it looks a lot better than in the pictures but the other one is very very short and integrates a lot better in the interior of the Z4

That is indeed the only reason I can imagine why BMW is doing this but in coutries like Belgium it won't be easy to sell a 35i anyway due to our taxsystem...

So true.

For some time I was even thinking about ordering a 35i only because of the stick (price difference in my configuration would have been roughly 5000 €).

But then I returned to reason and stayed with my 23i...

me being the visual one again....

Straight away it looks quite full - any woman would love that size

but on the side looks like its not big deal of deal beaker.....

sorta of an oxymoron - smaller engine large stick...larger engine little stick... I think BMW is playing with us..(opps)
