Yeah, iPhone's don't work with other bluetooth devices. Only the ones Apple makes for it. It sucks I know, a lot about the iPhone sucks. But its a sweet phone none-the-less

I had the first version of the iphone and it worked with my car. Then I dropped it on the ground and it broke so I bought the 3G version and that's working seamlessly also.

I have the 3G iPhone and everything works just fine (syncs contacts, etc.). The first thing to do would be to make sure that your iPhone software is up to date (2.2 is the lastest, I believe). Connect it to iTunes and make sure that this is the case. Good luck.
