DRL's

Hello,

I just bought a 2006 325i and i was wondering where the DRL's went? I am thinking maybe there is something wrong with my car, but its hard to compare when there are so few 2006 models out there on the roads. Did they stop putting DRL's on the new 2006 models, i remember the E46 models had them.

I have no lights on whatsoever when i turn my car on, unless i go thru a tunnel and the sensor kicks the lights on. Not sure if this is normal and they dont come with the DRL feature or if i should take me car in to the shop.. I just bought it on Monday so i hope that its not the latter.

Thanks!

They are a user programable option. Check your manual on how to set them to be on.

IMO, I wouldn't want to use the DRL feature to have Xenons on.

In Canada, DRLs are mandatory because various studies have shown that they save lives. The same should be true for the USA as well.

Well, whether it should or not is up to debate, but I do know on my car with Idrive I can select whether or not I want the DRL's on or off in the options.

Kuma,

Did you have Idrive on your car ? If so it's pretty to turn them on.

Without iDrive you can program the DRL using the stalk. It's in the same section where the autolock and memory seat recall are located.

If iDrive is the navigation thing, then no i do not have it. I am trying to look through an online manual to find out how to activate them but it seems to refer to nav based systems.

The online manual is specifically for i-drive cars. As others have mentioned, in non-i-drive cars, DRL settings/preferences (and others) can be accessed through the OBC stalk (1 of 2 stalks to your left). Its' as easy as that.

IMO, they don't look go either.

You do not have rear lights on with DRLs.

I rather use my fog lights and have rear lights too.

Do a search for DRL's daytime running lights on this forum. There has been much written about them.

In many states, it's the law that your headlights must be on if it is raining enough to use your wipers. I've never seen it enforced, though. I guess the cops figure they have more important laws to enforce.

For those choosing to turn off the DRL - what is the drawback to having them on? Shorter bulb life? Battery drain? If this is already discussed in previous threads, I apologize. I have not looked at them.

I drive with my lights on 90% of the time anyway... Daytime its halo's and fogs... any time its even remotely cloudy, xenons and fogs.

For safety reasons, I put them on so other drivers can see me... We all know how many oblivious or distracted drivers there are on the road...

Some people take notice of the flickering Xenons and I would hate for someone to get distracted and lose control and hit me instead. No need to replace the bulbs any sooner than you have to with DRL. Personal preference.

It should be in your manual. If you still need help, I'd be happy to post the instructions for you.

I was able to figure it out last night Thanks for all the help. I figure anything that helps to keep me safer while driving is well worth turning on, from what i can tell its just the high beams at a reduced level, not the xenons that turn on.

edit: the odd part is that i cant find a page in my manual that explains what the other lighting/icons are for in that menu.

If you put on DRL's here, every 2nd car flashes you and others even chase you down to tell you you forgot your lights on

DRL's dont use the Xenon bulbs, but the inner halogen
