Most stripped out 135i ever sold in US?

I was visiting relatives in Portland this weekend, and was told of a black on black 135i for sale at Rasmussen off the lot at $35K about six months ago.

Reportedly, this car had no sunroof and cloth interior.

No way! I assured my protagonist that no such car has ever been sold in the U.S.

Was I wrong?

I console myself with the notion that if someone did manage to get the dealer somehow to order a 135i with some non-NA deletes, that car wouldn't have been legal for stock SCCA since the deal would have been outside normal dealer sales.

Was I wrong?

Boy, I sure am driving around a porker! (But who cares.)

Cloth interior is not offered in the USA for the 1-series. "Leatherette" (vinyl) is the only non-leather option. I suppose it's possible that the dealer took it on his own to add an aftermarket cloth interior....

Too bad cloth isn't offered. It's really nice cloth.

On the other hand, given how much Americans eat and drink and spill in their cars, maybe it's a good idea.

If it didn't have the sunroof and did have cloth it wasn't a U.S. spec car. Could it have been grey market from Canada?

Cloth is also not available in Canada - perhaps Mexico?

If I had the option, that's the way I would have ordered mine. Cloth seats and no sunroof.

No doubt, this would be the prefered configuration for a car heading to competition. My question is did such a car grace the Portland dealership, and what's the story? Did someone somehow cajole a BMW dealer into getting a car that didn't match the North American marketing spec?

It could have been grey market, probably was if it really happened. I don't know for sure that it did...

I'd say that without pics, it didn't happen....

The car we got to turn into the race car had only:

- Silver Metalic Paint
- Sport package (which was okay, because initially we needed the higher speed limiter and the steering wheel is nice. Also, there are buyers out there for the leatherette manual sport seats, so the $1000 for it wasn't all a waste)

had the Sunroof

If I could have gotten the car with nothing, I probably would have, but that's the car that we found and that's what it had on it (and at that time, we were lucky to find that one with as little on it as it had)

I think it's so funny how the rest of the world must think we are all fat, ugly, smelly, uneducated idiots who are completely disconnected from reality.

Yes, it's quite concerning how often American drivers/people are spoken down upon in these threads. Mods, are you listening? You won't let us say "stealership" about the dealers but people can piss all over Americans with unintelligent, stereotypical BS.

^ I wouldn't be too concerned. Most intelligent people understand the difference between a stereotype and reality.

Besides, when they don't we can all point and laugh at the "ignorant European"

Maybe one of the early program cars or something? Other than that I can't see how it would have gotten here with those options.

the thing that does concern me is the vast number of "ignorant europeans" that there seems to be these days... i guess there isn't too much we can do about it. sometimes i just think we shouldn't have saved europe from the grips of Hitler. :iono:

one thing for sure is majority of Americans i've ran into simply don't understand how the fast lane in a freeway works. it was incredibly refreshing to drive around in europe where people actually move over for you before you have to tailgate them for 10min

Well, it helps that it's actually illegal there to pass on the right. Here, specifically in California, it is not illegal to pass on the right on a freeway.

I noticed that when I moved from the Midwest over a decade ago, where more freeways are only 2 lanes in each direction, that folks were better about the concept of the fast lane. Here, so many freeways are 3 and 4+ lanes in each direction that folks just don't care. Also, I'm not sure that people really are trained on how best to drive on large motorways when they get their license. At least it sure doesn't feel that way!

Gentle reminder; even though thread drift is our specialty at 1Addicts, it's wandered very far afield in this one. Back on topic please. ; -)
