and the car will make horrid noises at you and tell you that the parking brake is on

eventually the noise and funny smell should alert you that the parking brake is on

I doubt that you did drive with the parking brake on, as it would be too hard to not notice

you can easily tell because there is a big fat red icon saying "BRAKE ON"

if u think that is a "misfire", then the smoke will confirm it is not, hehe

my parking brake is fairly tight, so it only really needs two stops to hold the car on a hill. so if i had left it engaged, the car would have a really hard time moving.

like others said, there is an audible warning plus a sign (i believe the indash display also goes red, not sure), so there is no mistaking it.

Do you think you drove the car with the hand brake on?

If you have driven with it on for some time, might want to get it checked. Just make sure that it will still hold the car when shifter in Drive.

Nah, I drove a rental for an hour on the highway once with the parking brake engaged. The only think I notcied was that pickup was slow; I figured that was because it was a Ford Escort, until I got home, parked the car, and tried pulling up on the parking brake handle, and noticed taht it was already at the top position!

I later checked to see if the brake still held on a hill, and it worked fine.

My dad on his old Mercedes drove around with the parking brake on, and before he realized it, the car would not move anymore and we could detect that brake burn smell. We got out of the car, and the brake drums were red hot, and smoke was steaming out from the tires. After they cooled down, the car would not move without some serious gas, so we decided to tow. Upon repair it was discovered the brake rotors were warped from the heat and needed to be replaced.

sure, but on our cars, the brake holds well, the car beeps and flashes a light. So, the car would be slow, loud, and blinking a light.

... I sure HOPE one would notice something was amiss...

I once drove a 15 passenger van with the parking brake still engaged. There was a cloud of smoke on the highway for 5 miles behind me before I realized that I was an idiot. I was a brand new driver at the time and driving an unfamiliar vehicle. I don't do that anymore.

back when i was in high school, this one guy borrowed his brother's car, a not so good shape triumph tr7. he accidently drove it around with the ebrake on. the brake drums were red hot. my friend (not the driver) wanted to throw a bucket of water on it. my other friend said, "no, you're gonna crack the drums!" hahaha

Comedian Mitch Hedbger (RIP) had this as a part of his stand-up act:

"When I drive a rental car, I don't know what's going on with it, right? So a lot of time I drive, like, 10 miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it says even less for the "emergency brake." It's more like an "emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever."

I miss him.

Then you need to get reassembled and fixed when that happens...
unless you mean "brake" as in stop?
