low engine oil @ 2200 miles. ANYONE ELSE?
so i got off work yesterday and all of a sudden... DING, low in engine oil. my oil level has hit lower than min or at min and i did my 1200miles oil change couple weeks ago. did this happen to anyone else? good thing i had an extra quart of oil in the trunk so i put it in when i went to install my grills and lights.
but i just thought it was odd it burnt so much oil that fast. i am sure the way i drive have something to do with it but i am not rough on the gas pedal every time  any thoughts? |

Maybe you forgot to put the drain plug back in after the first oil change.

While I never had a BMW turbo, my last 3 BMWs used less than one quart before the first change at 7,500 miles. After that, no oil was added between the 7~8k changes.
Unfortunately, if they can't find a leak, your dealer will probably tell you that 1 qt./1,000 mile consumption is not excessive as this seems to be the industry mantra. Tom |

From day one, my 330 has used about one quart every 2500 miles without fail. Compression is good, so I don't really care. I just make sure I carry a couple of quarts with me to the track and add as needed.

Yep, that's exactly what they'll do. I took my 325Ci in because it was burning a lot of oil (1qt over 2,000 miles). They told me the same thing and even showed it to me on the computer.

I think something's wrong. At the rate of burning 1qt at 2-3K miles mean's you'll be dumping in a quart of oil every 1.5months. All this prior to your first scheduled maintenance? Doesn't sound right to me. In my S4 I changed the oil out every 5k miles and it maybe, just maybe loses about 1/4 qt. My 89 civic doesn't even burn that much oil either.

Could be the above posted 1k/1qt or could be your oil level sensor.. top it off. If it doesn't go away or returns within a week or so I'd take it to the dealer.. car is under warranty, can't hurt

i did follow break in. i was very good with the car til 1200 miles.
i took it to my mechanic for the oil change and we did put 6 quarts instead of 7 quarts in there. the sales at BMW said 6-7 quarts so when we put in 6 quarts, the oil indicator said full so i didn't want to over do it and put the extra quart in the trunk. so maybe that's why? |

So is this covered by the "free" maintenance? I mean if the "free" maintenance only covers an oil change every 15K miles, but the car is burning oil at a 1K/1qt rate then what's the point? By the time you get to 15K miles you will have already put two oil changes worth of new oil into the car.

good point there. i think they would fill up the oil the first few times. then if u really go in there once a month, i think they might start charging you? not sure since i didn't go to the dealership for the 1200 miles oil change.

From the sounds of this you didn't get quite enough oil back in the engine. I'd top it off and pay attention to the mileage, but I'm betting there's nothing wrong other than it was a little short from the last oil change. If it were completely full what we're talking about here is a car using a quart of oil in 1000 miles, and that would certainly indicate a problem, but I think you'll be fine after you top it off. (I'd keep a quart on hand just in case though) |

Certainly possible you were shorted a little oil at that first oil change.
But... It's NOT uncommon for a new engine to use a little extra oil in the beginning. Just keep an eye on it, and unless your engine uses an abundance of oil continously... I would not worry about this at all.

Like Tagman said, it's not uncommon for any new engine to burn some off in the first couple thousand miles.
In your case, it sounds like it wasn't filled all the way when you did the break-in change, and the engine was still running in and using a tad more oil (than it eventually will), and tripped the light. Of course no dipstick makes this impossible to check visually... |
