Controlling iPod from the steering wheel?

Not just the tracks, but how can I scroll between menu's, i.e. artist, song, album etc., using the steering wheel button. I do not have iDrive if that makes a difference.

AFAIK you can't. The steering wheel buttons only allow you to move forward or backward thru the tracks. The buttons on the radio provide genre, artist, album, playlist selection.

FWIW, I haven't found the controls to be an issue. I still have to look at the radio to see the display, so reaching over to use the radio buttons and knob isn't a hardship.

That is kind of annoying, I was hoping there was a way to reprogram the buttons. Especially the ones for bluetooth which are useless to those of us without BMW Assist.

I wouldn't mind it either. Currently in my car I have an auxilary setup, so every time I want to go through tracks or what not, I have to look down. That is until I switched to an iPod shuffle where I just have a bunch of random songs and don't have to worry about caring for the condition of it, as its only a shuffle.

I thought a couple of the buttons were programmable? I could have sworn I read that in here somewhere, and someone had set one as for the Mute function.

I thought so too. Im going to go home and half watch the Detroit/Dallas game and half read the owners manual to try and figure it out.

the programmable buttons on the wheel are limited in their usefulness. There is a limited amount of assignments you can give to each button.

Options include:
-Mute Audio
-Next Entertainment Source
-Repeat Navigation Instructions
etc, etc

you cant give it whatever assignment you want.

If you have Idrive, however, those buttons next to the DVD drive are programmable to a lot. You can assign them to phone numbers, radio stations, navigation waypoints and more!

You need IDrive to program the buttons.

So can I program one of the 2 useless buttons to mute the radio? How does it say in the owners manual?
