Clown nose?

Ive read in these treads we call the red button below the rear view mirror the "clown nose" which is intergrated with the alarm.
My 3 does NOT have the alarm but the red light still blinks when the ignition is off.
I've read in a previous thread that a dealer can turn on this feature (so it blinks) even if the vehicle doesnt have an alarm (like my 3).
My dealer told me he cant turn on the "clown nose"light unless you purchase the alarm with the 1.
Is he bullsh*ting because he wants me to buy the alarm?
Really want the light to blink when away from car, but hear that the bmw alarm sorta sucks.
Thanks

I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty much calling BS on that. Just about anything is configurable on these cars. If you want it to blink, I'd bet dollars to donuts they can make it blink sans alarm system.

But does anyone know how to personally activate the blinking clown nose or the chirp? Or is it something the dealer must do?

Check the owners manual, a lot of things are user selectable.

The dealer should be able turn it on by hooking it up.

The chirp comes from the alarm siren.

You can, if you own or work as a mechanic at a BMW dealership.

Maybe this is something that can be changed via the rumored "secret menu" if someone wants to try it.

It's not. The car MUST be hooked up to a machine only found at a BMW dealership. There's no other way around.

The 'secret menu' is only for diagnosing instrument cluster issues.

That sorta sucks! All dealer has to do is push a button to satisfy a customer but nooooo, lets try to get some more $$$ outta him.
Really like the deterrent the blinking light gives, especially now with a vert, but hear the bmw alarm is a pain.
Also, quite frankly why do we need the alarm when we all know that bmw connect knows where our vehicles are all the time, just like lojack.
Yeah, I know if the car is put in a trailer bmw connect wont work. Shoot by the time the police get to your car even with lojack it may be too late.
(guess i need to bribe the mechanic)

bski.

As a follow-up, has anyone without the alarm had their dealer turn on the clown nose blinking light?

i've got a pretty good relationship with my dealer, and i know he checked on this. apparently whatever BMW did, you can't make it blinkif the alarm isn't installed.

Don't know if this DIY would work on the E82, but it is an interesting work-around.

I thought there was a DIY on some other forum.. I forget which one.. and it involved making a simple lil circuit board from cheap radio shack parts and installing it in the overhead light area... I will see if I can find it...

I asked my dealer to turn it on, they said they try but it didn't work. It has something to do with the 1 software that doesn't allow to switch it on without having the alarm system installed. However, my CA recommended that whenever I bring the car in for service I should ask the service people again in case there's an update on the software......this is what I've been told.

Has any other 1ers got theirs turn on without the alarm system?
