sticker number plates???

Hey guys,
i'm wondering if anyone knows where, or how, you can get those sticker number plates, well they look like stickers of some sort.... Seen quite a few ferraris and porsches with them. Theyre usually only the front numberplate, as there is no real number plate position on the front, and they dont seem to be drilled in, but rather wrapped perfectly around the shape of the bumper.
I've tried ringing vic roads, but they have no idea what im talking about...
As im not too keen on drilliing holes into a fresh new bumper, i would like to get one of these "sticker" ones if possible.

These are illegal. Only regulation size and colour numberplates are legal. At least I know this through hard-learnt experience to be the case in SA and QLD. IF you decide to go with one of these stickers then you take your chances. The fine is probably the cheapest fine you will ever pay though!

Illegal in VIC too, but the police don't enforce it that hard on Ferrari's and Porsches. Not sure about a BMW though. Yes, they do discriminate!

Bugger. I'm getting a front plate sticker here in Belgium where they are actually legal (surprised the hell out of me - Belgians love to make everything illegal). They are still reflective and (almost) the same size as a regular numberplate. Just look a lot tidier.

So this means I'll have to go back to a big chunky plate when I return to Melbourne

I've used heavy duty industrial double sided tape to hold on my normal number plates and they don't look like moving at all. No holes required!

On Cozza's recommendation, I got mine done at Signarama in West Melbourne. Did the artwork myself. Result is really good.

Nice one. Got a pic? (doesn't have to be the whole plate if you're funny about displaying it)

Kris, Signarama have locations Australia-wide, but you'd need to get the artwork done yourself, as I did (I used Photoshop to create a 300dpi file/image and had a graphic designer friend recreate the font for the numbers and letters).

Signarama can then print it on reflective white vinyl, which has the same reflective properties as a regular number plate.

I might call Singarama here in Brisneyland and see if I can get me some of these. I like the idea of not drilling into the bumper.

It was printed on reflective background. Looks better in the flesh. I did the art work using autocad.

The way that the vinyl plates are done here in Belgium is there are two vinyl stickers. A red sticker with nothing on it and then a white sticker with the letters cut out over the top. Looks really authentic and means there isn't actually any printing cost. Just a red piece and a white piece. I noticed there is another thread about numberplates which had a picture of a car with red lettering on white. That is a Belgian plate.

Thats the same way it was done. A white reflective sticker for the background and a black sticker with the letters and numbers cutout stuck over the top.

The results you guys are getting are making me wonder why they don't issue sticker number plates from Vic Roads ( et al ). It is almost impossible to tell they are not genuine except for the fact they are stickers not plates.

They look very good and totally genuine, especially with a little distance

Definitely a good idea/alternative in cases like the 1ers front end, where you wouldn't want to poke holes in it...

Only problem I can think of (besides the legality and police concerns) is it would be too easy to steal off the car...

Way too much of that going on, especially here in Vic. and these thieves then using other peoples plates on theirs or stolen cars to commit crimes, most common being fill up and run from servos

In spite of that, it's something I'd still consider doing, so as not to blemmish the front end of a nice car, oh and welcome to my World, ie: the use of AutoCAD, something I play around with for a living

Question I thought of- is there any problems with removing the plates once they've been stuck on, or do they come off the panel ok?

I'd hope the glue doesn't take paint with it is all.

Not entirely sure, but I assume they'd be 'tacked' on in the corners or perimeter only with a double sided sponge tape, maybe like 3M exterior double sided stuff - that way removal can be done without too much to clean off the car afterwards...

Be a bit of a bugger if the whole area were a sticky back, but that would make the possibilty of theft of the plate as mentioned earlier a bit harder :iono:

Nah, the vinyl isn't strong enough to remove paint.
