My 2019 Sapphire Black F32 440i (OPF)

Well its rainy and miserable outside and I am about to blow a load of cash modding my car... before I do that I thought I'd make a thread about my car in the UK section as I have had a hard time deciding what to go with as my 440i has an OPF or PPF whichever way inclined you are fitted and is a November 2019 model so has the ECU/DME locked.

So I bought the car on 2/12/22 parting ways with a stage 1 tuned Mk7 Golf R DSG making 360BHP.

The Golf

The BMW with factory options which included;

Harmon Kardon
Advanced Parking pack
M sport pack
Digital dash
Enhanced Bluetooth connectivity

When I got the BMW I was extremely happy there was no doubt about that, I found the BMW to be a step up from the Golf in almost all areas from interior quality which included things like zero rattles, better interior materials, digital dash, the gearbox is smoother, power delivery is smoother. The only thing I found to be slightly irritating from the moment I drove it home was the lack of grip and general harsh ride height from the rears/tyres. The Golf was faster and felt more nimble through the corners but the Golf was running upgraded suspension and pilot sport 4s tyres.

This is how she arrived:

The first thing I did was fit the Droid UK MMI box so I could have wireless android auto in my car, something which I had in the Golf as standard in a 2016 car I found it baffling this wasn't available in the BMW's but anyway it's one of those once you've had it you cant go without it things...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

I also fitted a wireless charger behind the cupholders in place of the rubber mat that was there previous, reason for this is wireless android auto is quite a drain on the battery so now when I get in the car I put my phone on the wireless charging mat and have android auto available on the screen with no wires needed which is lovely!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

Following this some basic interior/exterior styling mods, black grills single slat not the M car double slats which some people like to go for, some aluminium pedal covers, hate the look of standard rubber pedal covers in a "luxury car" I think its a sin they don't come with some nice aluminium on them, ill get some better pics at some point and update.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

Following this not really a mod but some paint maintenance I had the body work decontaminated, 2 stage corrective polish all over before having a 5 year ceramic coating applied and the glass sealed. I only had the wheels washed no coating as they were next to be changed.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

Next up... wheels. wasn't particularly a fan of the 442m wheels it came on and as mentioned previously even less of a fan of the run flat tyres. So I was in the market for a set of forged 437m wheels from an M2/3/4 on some premium rubber that wasn't run flats. I won a set on Michelin Pilot super sport tyres on eBay, the rears had about 4mm tread left enough to see me through a year or so. I picked them up and got them fitted. Pretty much perfect fitment from my own point of view maybe a slight bit of poke from the fronts but nothing major or silly.

Next up, M performance lip spoiler for the F32, it comes in matt black, I had it painted and fitted for £120 to match the car, its subtle but I really like the look of it.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/199542...posted-public/

and finally the mod which takes us up to date, I bought some used Bilstein B16 PSS10 coilovers from another forum member and set about installing them myself. The ride heigh prior was far too high for my liking and I also didn't enjoy how "floaty" the car was particularly in the rear. I have the sem to 4/10 the front are as low as they will go and the rears are a couple mm higher.

Transformation on the suspension is unreal, the ride is firmer but in the corners it is just so much more confidence inspiring. Even so I'd say the suspension mods are worth it for aesthetics alone as it seems to of helped with tucking the fronts under the car a little more.

All up to date now as of 04/11/23, I am about to pull the trigger on some performance modifications and will just keep this thread updated as I go, mainly for my own use but also for anyone who might find it interesting or fancies some inspiration for their own f32.

Have you checked the DME is locked?

If it’s still on an early 2019 istep version it should still be unlocked.

Download the MHD app and check for free, just need with OBD adaptor.

Hey thanks for letting me know, I actually have a bimmercode adapter would that work? If not I have an OBD to Enet cable which I could use.

Didn't realise you could check for free without having purchased a tuning map. For sure I will check it out as it would save me a few quid and a trip to London it looks like.

I think you’ll need the wireless MHD adaptor if you’re on android. Only the enet cable and lightning adaptor work with iOS.

Nope i got my android phone to get it to work. Have to turn Ethernet tethering on, Thanks to someone here who let me know.

I am waiting for black Friday to buy MHD OR BM3 to go stage 2. May be deals on.

Nice Mods you have done. I recently got rid of RFT on the rear. Mine grips so well. Have RFT on the front, No ill effects as of yet, will test them and change to non rft fronts if required.

Never used it with android but just going off the website…

Good to know it works on android.

Normally 10-15% off on MHD Black Friday.

That looks superb on the 437Ms and B16s; the drop is perfect

Thanks for the info so far about checking if the ECU is locked or not. I have checked and my samsung S22 ultra is capable of ethernet tethering need to turn it on. I have ordered a USB C - Enet adapter as I already have a Enet to OBD cable I will find out tomorrow if its going to be as simple as flashing the new map or if I need to get it bench unlocked first.

I am also waiting on black Friday deals and will most likely go with BM3. I am going to start with a stage 1 map and XHP stage 3 for the gearbox, I will be replacing the downpipe with a high flow catted DP I am a little nervous for passing emissions tests during MOT, my MOT is due end of November so will probably get the test done and swap the DP shortly after.

Any recomendations for downpipes? Currently looking at.... https://www.psr-parts.com/en-gb/coll...41139299746001

200 cell high flow cat which fits B58 cars with OPF. Open to others experiences/recommendations though.

Thanks, got to so I am really pleased with how it looks. There was a period I was looking to swap it for another 440i that wasn't black. its my first black car and to be honest I'd never have another one but for now I will live with it, looks great for 30 mins when its clean but thats about it, can see every little imperfection on black.

Yup; I owned a sapphire black E39 530i Sport for around 18months... Loved it, until I washed it and then could see every swirl on it; polished it and it looked amazing, for a few weeks and then right back to what annoyed me

Said I'd never own another black car again after that

Did buy an Azurite Black F01 (dark blue) and that wasn't as bad; but still hard work to keep clean/swirl free...

Good news today, USB c -enet adaptor came today, plugged phone into OBD and ran the MHD app unlock checker and sure enough no unlock required which I was really surprised about.

Continental Sport Contact 7's to replace the worn Michelins today. I know a new tyre will always be better then a worn old tyre but still super impressed by the wet grip tonight on the way home much more confidence inspiring only thing is they defo don't look as good as the michelins but nice bit of kerb protection still.

I asked XHP if they're planning a sale over the rest of November and they've informed me that their sale starts Wednesday 22nd so will be flashing XHP next week and MHD or BM3 can't chose currently... the week after.

I've been seriously weighing up the pro's/con's of MHD vs BM3 in the last week or two as I know I will go with one or the other but which?!

To be honest I don't really have a verdict.. I pulled the trigger on the MHD super license this morning for £390 which seems like an absolute bargain in the black Friday sale but there wasn't really any reasons for picking it over BM3 other then the MHD maps seem to be a bit more timing focuses rather then maxing the turbo out. That's just what I've read about anyway they both seem to be bulletproof options.

I am expecting XHP sale to start Wednesday.

Recieved my recent order from Autodoc yesterday... all the bits to carry out an oil service prior to tuning. Also bought a new drop link for the offside front as I do have a little clonk when turning left at really low speeds (doing a 3 point turn or turning left out of a junction) easiest cheapest bit to start with it the drop link.. if this doesn't sort it then ill replace the top mount and if that doesn't sort it ill be going down the road of replacing arm & tie rods which would be unfortunate. Not a great time of year for doing all those bits..

Anyway excited is an understatement for tuning.

So I took the plunge today and tuned the car.. I do have a couple of questions though if anyone reading this might be able to give some more info.

Flashed MHD Stage 1 OTS map. I have been running my car on 99 octane tesco momentum for the last couple weeks in preparation for this day. I really want to ensure I don't have any knock and the engine is running healthy.

So when selecting my MHD stage 1 map I was faced with the option of RON VS Octane now I know MHD is German and I know in America Octane ratings aren't consistent with UK octane ratings or at least thats my understanding. So airing on the side of caution with 99 tesco momentum in the tank I flashed the 93 octane/98 ron stage 1 map. The only other option for normal pump fuel in the UK is 95 octane/102 ron.

I guess what I'm asking is.... MHD's 95 octane, is that the same as regular e10 95 in the UK? I have searched their website and various threads but cant find an answer. Can I flash the 95 octane/102ron map with 99 momentum fuel in the tank and be all good?

I also flashed XHP Stage 3 and to be honest I just can't believe the difference, the engine and gearbox seem to be in perfect harmony fast crisp shifts coupled with excellent power delivery it really is excellent and all for the price of £670 with maximum adjust ability for both the MHD and XHP maps. Really impressed.

Looking forward to changing the oil, giving it a wash and taking some pics at the weekend

For the UK, 95RON and 98RON maps are your two options for pump fuel.

If you run the 95RON map with 99 Tesco momentum in the tank it should run clean ignition timing with zero knock.

Depending on your location, the quality of 99 Momentum varies so on the 98RON map I’ve had issues with over 6 degrees ignition timing pull and knock detected so always a good idea to take a log.

Take a 4th gear log on the 95RON map and 98RON map and I’ll take a look.

Hey thanks for the offer, I ran a couple logs tonight, it's the first time i've ever done this so hopefully their OK. If you wouldnt mind reviewing and let me know what you think that would be ace. Or if my logs suck tell me what I might be able to do better?

Cheers pal.

The 98RON log doesn't look too bad. Cylinder 1 looks to have timing pull but seems to dropping as you near the redline which is a good sign. All other cylinders are under 3 degrees which is fine.

With the temps being cooler, probably ok to run that map.

The 95RON log looks like you had traction switched on as it has throttle closures right through.

Thanks for your time.

Why would I have issue with timing on just one cylinder is this to be expected or unusual?

To be honest I don't think either of those pulls were very good, choice of road and weather conditions were questionable. I will see if I can get a few better logs this weekend for review.

F series M car paddles fitted today. Spare wheel (M2C bare wheel) also arrived.

Carbon/Alcantara interior trim due next week. Addicted to say the least.

Car is such a beast I cant even find room on these jam packed road at 19:30pm for a bit of fun....

Also had the 4 wheel alignment checked locally the other week.. thought the car looked cool on the ramp

Those paddles look really well; mine are spugged away in the garage with the newly trimmed wheel as I need to remove the current one and swap everything across to it, so will do it on one swoop etc

Cheers.

Quite happy with them, keep viewing the carbon wheel trim now to finish the how thing off before I get the spare wheel re-trimmed (might get it done for my birthday in April if I can wait that long)
