2023 BMW X4 M40i  [10.00]
Are we in the early stages of a crash in used car price?

I've been looking closely at various cars/models, specifically sport sedan (M2, M4, 911, 718) over last few months and to a degree since last year..

Seems like prices are dropping HARD.. every listing on sites like CarFax/CarGurus showing dealers dropping prices aggressively.. 10%-20% lower from prices a few months ago..

So the changes are subtle.. saw tons of BMW/Porsche listed for $90k ish in July and now, a month later, it's listed for $77k (what the hell???), it makes me think that I should keep waiting, anyway, that's a big win for a shopper.

this wasn't going to last forever... and it is really good to see... a 2 year old G80 M3 is not an 80k car lol... some folks will learn this the hardway

It makes me wonder if leasing was the right route. How would that work 3 years from now when the lease is up?

Not sure which year you're referring to. I loved my C63 AMG 6.2L.

2026 will see a return to the V8 though.

"Car Dealership Guy" on Twitter is fun to follow if you're into this stuff. As is the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index.

I've been following the trade-in offers closely for the last couple of months. This is a strange market as none of the local BMW dealers, nor Audi dealers as of a couple of weeks ago were moving off MSRP. In fact, one Audi dealer is still listing their cars over MSRP.

I did reach out to a couple of Genesis dealerships since I was looking at a G70 and one of them told me that they were offering "good deals off MSRP" without getting specific. When I'm ready to drop power the GV70 looks promising. I have issues with how they option it, so maybe not.

For trade values, Carvana and CarMax, have murdered my wife's 2022 Q5 - it stickered at 59k last May and they're only offering 40k. I expect 20% first-year depreciation, especially on a German car, but 30%+ is silly.

My 69k 11-month-old M40i isn't faring much better - it was at 55k a couple of months ago as a trade-in to two different BMW dealerships.

So I'm doing nothing except watching this mess sort itself out.

Your M40i resale value is a function of BMW itself more than anything... there are folks already getting 8-10% off... so they are literally buying 24s like yours for 63k new... there should honestly be little surprise here. Paying full price last year gave you a high trade in upside... if that's not how you worked this deal out... then it was obvious sooner or later, that's how things would turn out. There is no way to expect more than 55 on trade at this point.

I'd agree on the m40i if the dealerships around here were selling below MSRP. Haven't found one yet, although I'm going to make the rounds again in mid-September. The broker option is there, and that might well be my next route. Which is why I'm waiting for things to stabilize. BMW dealerships typically like people to trade their BMWs early, especially well-cared-for low mileage units. But, once people see the deficit of a low in-brand trade vs an MSRP purchase price, something's got to give. If you're in an area getting the 8-10% off MSRP, which would counterbalance the crappy trade-in value, I'm happy for you, but it's not my market reality. Yet.

it wasn't mine either... i paid full price last year of 68K... but i got a full trade in of 60k for my old car that i paid 60k for 4 years ago lol... so yea i get what you are saying... but the reality is that there is going to be a lot of holding the bag everywhere soon with these new market realities... the auto market will be the first to bust in my mind... there is no other way i would have bought an m40i for 68k... because just by nature, i don't think this car is worth that type of $.. especially given historical resale value

The main deals are on EVs right now, huge swing - last year they were all 5K over MSRP, now Audi and BMW are sending me feelers for 7.5K on leases plus MSRP discounts. But the M40i is still doing better, the dealer is definitely desperate for me to trade in because they don't have enough used inventory on those. But they have like 100 i4s and 50 iXs. All because Tesla dropped prices.

Last year I got great Carmax trade in quotes. But much lower recently, people have dropped trade-in offers across the board (Carmax lost money last quarter because of some of these offers)

Where is anyone getting 8-10% off an ordered m40i? I'm in negotiations right now, and my dealer is at 4%. I'm happy to fly in drive home cross country.

The reckoning is already here. Folks not used to how the market was before the Pandemic are in for a shock!

it probably won't be an order but rather an in stock car that's been sitting... or a broker combined with loyalty discounts... either way the point is, no one should be paying close to full price at this point... a year ago was a different story... its not even a baseline at this point any longer... your 4% off on my car would translate to nearly 3k off already... before any other rebate... there is no way i'd be buying a new x3 right now... if barely 2 year old m40s are sitting even after being asked 55k w under 10k miles lol... a year ago you couldn't even find one to drive - used or new

My m40i is hitting production tomorrow and I am only looking at 5% off $76k MSRP on a lease. Trying to figure out how to bring the price down even further or reduce the monthly payments using MSDs.

Not sure how that will translate later, but I needed a car and I wanted all the bells and whistles and thought it would be more desirable later. Wish I knew more about leases, but I've had 5 cars in the last 7 years so buying wasn't something I was interested in this time around.

76k? Wow, you must have that loaded with every option in the book. The only things I think I was missing from mine were the m-sport-diff, spare tire, rear heated seats, and the rear window shades, although I stuck with the base 19" wheels and RFTs. Although 5% off 76k does bring it down to $72,200 which is still $3200 more than mine.

Just checked the only two dealers I'd actually consider buying from, one has exactly one new M40i which does list driver and passenger lumbar on Sensatec and is reasonably optioned out. That's the dealership I ordered my current X3 from and is a 2-hour drive for me. My local dealership where I bought my 2 previous X3s has only one 90k X3 M on the lot. So yeah, I can see why they're getting MSRP.

Yup. I skipped the carbon grill and mirror and loaded up everything else including 20's and M Sport Diff. Even got the tow hitch. Two years ago I had an X3MC priced out for only $6k more. That same X3MC is $93k.

I learned my lesson on my 19 M40i. Cost me a little over 2k to get the official BMW parts in and coded. $600 is a lot better.

I added it on later after my friend convinced me to get it. I was glad I did after finding out what it would cost to add one after.

Here's my full build if anyone is interested. Production date is tomorrow so I hope to have it by this weekend.
