break service miles

Would it be better to do break in service at roughly 1000 miles or at 1300ish?

Leaving for a road trip on Thursday, so I could do it before I leave here or once I get to the destination (about 4 hours away).

Car is currently in for PPF and tint so I can’t rack up more miles until Thursday which is the day I’m planning to leave. Any suggestions?

That’s what I’m leaning towards as well.

I dropped it off at 1004, and I could probably put a couple dozen miles on it between PPF pickup and my service appointment.

I've read that BMW will sometimes do it earlier than the recommended 1,200 but won't do it if you come in with sub 800 miles (or they have to run it up to corporate to ensure they will cover future warranty claims). You can never hit it perfect on the mileage, so I'd just call the dealership so they can give you concrete direction and ensure either way you will still be covered.

That being said, my conjecture is that you're going to be close either way and they will tell you to do what is most convenient. If it was a longer roadtrip and it was the difference between doing it at say 1,000 miles or 2,000 miles, I have a feeling they would tell you to come in sooner than wait.

I did mine at around 1,200 miles, but 1,000 miles wouldn't hurt. You only get the initial oil change and rear Dif fluids changed at the break-in service anyway. I originally thought they changed both front, and rear differentials, transmission and oil, but they don't... So my vote is to do it at 1k miles before your trip.

My dealership seemed to prefer 1300 to 1000. The reason stated was that the engine gets a chance to fully take advantage of the break-in period. I came in just under 1100 because I knew I'd definitely go over 1200 if I delayed another week but they took care of it anyway.

I’d do it before. This way you’ll have peace of mind and be able to stretch its legs (you know you’ll want to).

I forgot to update. Unfortunately my PPF took an extra day and I wasn't able to get to the dealership before the weekend, so I drove it up to my destination and made an appointment for Monday morning. Took it in at 1304 miles and there weren't any issues.

Good to hear. I remember hearing from some where that the cut off for when it becomes an issue with warranty is 2000 miles.

It'll depend on the situation really. My local dealer said they wouldn't have any problem up to 3-5k miles, not that you should let it get that high.

I think as long as you have a decent reason, it'd be fine.

Went in the local dealer to do the 1200 miles break in service this morning. 2 hrs later they text me and tell me they are out of the fluid to do the break in service for my car. They have to order the fluid from Germany and reschedule my service. God knows when they are coming. This is absolutely bad customer service. Now it get me thinking should I cancel my 15 hrs road trip in 2 weeks time.

Ouch. Yeah, there’s another thread about the fluid issue. Seems to be a hit and miss. Tell them you have a trip with the car and see what your options are. Expedited delivery of the fluid, another dealer within their network trade/sale of fluid, extend mileage interval, or even doing the service at point of destination (reserve the fluid in advance) etc.

I would demand a loaner if they want you to park the car until they get the fluid

I talked to the service manager about the whole mess. He said the differential fluid was on factory back order. He will speak with the parts team to see what they can do and get back to me. Cross my fingers and toes.

Update for the break in service. BMW Canada is out of the differential fluid. No ETA when the fluid will be available. My local dealership speak with BMW Canada and they agree to do the oil change for now. Once the differential fluid is available, they will schedule my car for another service. They also written in my car's maintenance record for this situation so it won't affect my future warranty repair.

Luckily, the diff fluid isn't any different than what they replace with (unlike the engine oil), so there's no need to worry about that. Getting the engine oil swapped is a much much bigger deal, so good on BMW for allowing them to do the oil separately.

I was called crazy when saying BMW was telling dealers there was a shortage, seems like it's not limited to the US lol.

I still can't believe on the shortage. How could BMW let this happen. For sure this will create lots of unhappy customers.

Hopefully BMW gets this issue resolved soon. Thanks again for the info and conspiracy theories that finally proved real. Who woulda thunk it.

Just called to schedule my break in service. 17 days from now was the 1st available date.

I made sure to confirm, that it’s ok, I go over the mileage limit listed on dashboard message, as I’m at 965 and I’m definitely gonna do more than 260miles over the next couple weeks.

Just an fyi for those wondering.

No issues at all. Even if you go 2-3k miles, it shouldn't be an issue. The important part is you've scheduled it before you hit 1200 miles and the dealer knows that you'll be over. It'd take some pretty egregious overage for BMW to complain after that point.

That's just not true. There are a few videos going over this service where BMW service techs state do not go over by 100's of miles, and requires BMW Corporate approval for continued warranty. Going 2000 or 3000 miles would certainly result in losing warranty. It's a 1200 mile service, not 2000 or 3000.

This is correct. You should not exceed by more then few hundred miles otherwise you risking your warranty.
