importing 1 series hatch?
has anyone had any experience with this?
i recently emailed BMW on the possibility on bringing the 1 hatch to the states. and they replied... Quote:
i have heard stories of people importing them from mexico. how was your experience with dealing with DOT and EPA? how was your experience with an ICI and a RI? expense? difficulty in finding one? what was the added cost to the vehicle? i need a new car buy the end of the summer. i'm leaning towards a GTI right now, actually have one lined up to buy. but the 1 series hatch has been the car of my affection for a long time, and if at all possible i'd like to get one. oh, would you recommend i get the GTI now, then trade that in for a 1 hatch if and when they do become available? thanks. |

I would take that "just yet" with a grain of salt. There are a lot of just yets going around. I believe a diesel coming here is not definite. Neither is a hatchback, or an M version. All three of these things are dependent upon how receptive the U.S. is to these cars.
Its so hard for them not cheapen the image of this brand.(unless thats what they want to do) I mean if a 128i comes in at 27-28k, is a diesel suppose to come in at 25k?? Also, genearally arent hatchbacks a little cheaper than coupes?

I think hatches are usually cheaper, but I guess it would depend. They could price it at the same level as the 128 coupe. You would either get a hatch or a coupe for the same price depending on your preference.

I wouldnt get my hopes up with "Just Yet" email.. I dont think Hatches are coming here from BMW, even though it would be my choice (hatch 123d or hatch 135i). So much more practicality..

yeah the 123d would be a much more practical for me than the coupe. much more stylish if i can say so. and a 2 litre turbo diesel with 200 horsepower and over 40 mpg... ohhh, how could you not want it?
didn't a member on here order one from mexico? but i don't think that's the way to go, with added cost of importation i might as well get something different, and the hassale wouldjust be troublesome. |

I see a number of Audi hatchbacks popping up around town, not to mention Mini Coopers and hatchback Scions, Honda Fits, etc. BMW's 1 series hatchbacks would sell like hot cakes in the US. They were just ahead of their time with the 318. I hope they give Americans another chance at a fuel efficient and stylish car. Bring us the 1 series hatchback, pleeeeease!

I am split 50/50. Some cars look good as a hatchback and some don't. Personally I like the 1 series hatch. You never know, it might do well in the US.

price wise, if you look at mazda 3's, their hatch is more expensive than their sedan

The 1 hatches are nice, but BMW may never try and sell them here until they do a redesign and stretch them a bit. The 1 coupes are actually longer than the hatches. The main complaint about the 1 hatches is that the rear seats are porsche-like, as is the cargo space. Though the overall sizes are close, the A3 seems to be bigger inside.

I'm thinking no hatch because of the pending X1 coming. BMW has fallen in love with the Xx series as they will be offered across the board...X1,X3,X5, X6. No room in the line for a hatch for America.

Best sources I've found for info on BMW model changes and worldwide distribution plans are via the CCA's Roundel and www.bimmerfile.com/
We've seen beaucoup 1 Hatches over the last 3 years throughout Europe - including on the roads and in special exhibits in places as diverse as little Malta and the Canary Islands. I wouldn't describe the hatch's backseat as significantly inferior to the coupe's. And if a 1 Series hatchback 123d was available in North America, I would find that very appealing. Jack |

Not really sure why you guys would want the hatch over the coupe?
The coupe has a much better ride and doesn't crash over the bumps like the hatch does. Seriously, I have driven both as I considered getting a 130i hatch a couple of years ago. The 1er coupe is a revelation compared to the hatch - apparently this is in part due to the increased weight and ridgidity. IMO you should drive both before making a decision, don't buy without trying!!
