i5 Tire Options
I'm finalizing my i5 40 order details and have a question about best wheel tire choice. I'm going with the m-sport primarily for the looks over the base. I also like the look of 20" vs 19" and I see there is an all-season non-mixed tire option. I'm trying to avoid a jarring ride and also the wandering I had on my previous 5-series on our highways with grooved pavement. Will going with the all-season be a better choice over the mixed performance? I'm sure the 19" is probably the best option but they look small on this car.

I’m doing i5 eDr40 with M sport too! I’m in the Midwest here and don’t want to switch out summers so going all season with this option: 20” Aero Spoke Bicol Bl Grey Light Alloy Wheels Style 939M w/ AS Non RFT Tires, 3GS.
I’m not a tire / suspension expert but think the car is going to ride nice no matter what tire / wheel combo you spec with the new dampers and rear axle air suspension. |

A/S vs performance tires depending on where you live. If you drive where it rarely gets below 40F then mixed performance tires would be fine except you can’t rotate them, otherwise A/S may be better. Performance tires turn hard as hockey pucks in cold weather. For ride comfort and bent wheel avoidance, the higher sidewall from the 19” is usually better than 20”.
However I agree the 19” looks a little small on the G60 where it looks just right on a G30. Also the ride will depend on the actual tires mounted from the factory. My G30 on 19s came with Pirelli P7 A/S RFT tires that were just awful (traction, ride comfort, noise). After a year I replaced them with Michelin PS3 A/S non rft and everything improved. That said if/when I trade for the G60 I’ll probably get 20” wheels.

According to the USA price guide and ordering guide only the 19” wheels model 934 & model 936(non M) are not staggered and 245/45/19 all around. Every other USA available wheel 19”; 20” or 21” are staggered 8.5”f & 10”r, regardless of the respective tires been performance or A/S.
On the i5 M60 you don’t get the higher top speed limiter with the A/S tires.(143 vs 130mph). I5 e40 is limited to 120mph either way. Also remember the stated battery ranges are with 19”. I have not seen what the range loss will be with bigger wheels. Last edited by zagaone; 07-13-2023 at 07:04 PM.. |

There appears to be no 21 inch All Season Tire options for the listed wheel dimensions.…anywhere. Be aware of this when ordering.

Oh so the term "mixed" with the non-AS tires doesn't refer to staggered? It's mixed-performance?

They updated the ranges now on the full website not mobile for tire and wheel selections. Standard at 295 miles for 19s to 270 miles for the 21s.

Even the 19 inch says mixed non RFT. Assuming they are staggered?

So BMW designs the new car larger so it looks better on larger wheels, then adds this disclaimer to the BYO configurator.
IMPORTANT INFO 20" wheels or bigger come with low profile tires, which reduce comfort and cushioning between the wheel and road. This can lead to increased risk of rim, tire, and suspension damage when driving over damaged road surfaces such as potholes. Sure, it’s self evident to many this would be true but a bit maddening they push you into that choice. Don’t remember this on the G30 configurator but maybe it was there.
