winter tyre

in the countries where it snows do you need differant tyres in the winter than in the summer. If i understands it you than need two complete set of tyres. I personally never seen snow in my life. I also find it strange the cold weather packages that some people order with there car. How cold does it get to need these pakages. Never realy gets realy cold in South Africa.

Yes, not even legal to use "summer tires" in the winter season in Sweden.

Been a mild winter here in johannesburg South Africa so far, we havent been below 0C ( 32F) yet at night

We drive with max performance tires all year round

For interest did you guys know that the breakthrough compound formula that made winter/Snow tires possible was developed by NASA for the Viking mars mission. It was developed for the landers parachutes and then found to make tires work well in freezing weather

We donīt actually have the "cold weather package"-option here in Norway, but all BMWs come with heated seats and headlight washers as standard. I presume "cold weather" is standard here. Cars further south, France, Spain, don't necessarely have the washers. Optional on the E90, auto heated external mirrors and heated outlets (don't have the right word) for the window washers.

For those unfortunate souls that don't experience true seasonal changes, winter packages are designed for comfort and to save your life! A 1/4" of snow on summer perfrormance tires can turn your car into a Bobsled with zero traction. Snow tires stand up to extreme temperatures where performance tires are less pliable in temperatures below 10C. They usually are more narrow and have a different tread design for added grip. I previously owned an A4 with quattro and got caught in a light dusting of snow with summer tires, even with quattro I had virtually no grip or control. Heated seats are a blessing too when it's minus 20C out as well. Heated mirrors and windshield washer nozzles go along way when you have ice buildup too. Talk about temperature extremes, this week in Toronto the average temp is around 32C and in the winter we have days when it can be minus 25C! You have to know how to drive in extreme conditions!
