Swapping tires after winter - better ones on front or back?

About to throw my summer tires back on. I have two that are just slightly worn more than the other two. Many sites say "new" tires should go on the rear for all cars, but what about ones slightly more worn than others? I'm not planning on replacing two at a time. I want to even out the wear. I assume the fronts wear slightly more than rears?

I'm no expert, but with the rears I thought would wear quicker due to the bias of the power going to the back.

Welcome to be told not :->

So basically the idea is better tires on the rear to prevent oversteer. And between oversteer vs understeer, for most drivers understeer is the safer option.

Garage List
Some interesting and probably bedtime reading, especially as it explains the different drive modes etc. if you have a square setup it’s obviously easier and more economical.

I was told to put your best tires on the front wheels, the ones that steer the car. If a bad tire fails on a rear wheel at least it will be easier to maintain control of the car than if a front tire failed.

Generally speaking, putting bad tires on the rear would most likely cause oversteer especially on wet roads. There aren't many people who can easily handle oversteer than understeer. Once the rear end steps out, it's game over for most drivers.

This is not entirely an issue on dry roads though.

According to Google:

"Rear-tire blowouts are usually more disruptive and dangerous than front-tire blowouts, as drivers have no control over the rear end of the vehicle. Front-tire blowouts are still dangerous but generally easier to manage, as you should be able to steer to counteract the force of the blowout."

Who am I to argue with Google.

You didn't ask which occurs more frequently, ppl driving on wet road or having a blowout.

Rotate regularly. Not possible in my garage, where they store my winter/summer tyres. That's why I want a jack to correct it in case I'm not happy with tyre wear. X3 has rear wheel preference. Better tread to the rear IMO.

First off, I assume you don't have staggered sizes. If you do, then this isn't even a question.

If all 4 are the same size, none of them are close to worn out, and your goal is to even out wear, put the better tires on the rear. Every rear-drive or rear-biased car I have had has worn its rear tires significantly faster than the fronts
