It´s only here for a visit (the press fleet folks said I am the first in the U.S. to get a 335d).

Not sure where the review will end up, probably in my monthly column in Business Traveler magazine and perhaps something in www.bmwcca.org or the Roundel.

find a stock 328 to drag race so we can understand if the extra $10k cost gets you more 1/4 mile performance.

i think a stock 335i would be a better comparison since it has less hp but more torque would be a interesting race (in a safe legal place of course)

BMW Car magazine, published in the UK, took both standard and tuned versions of the 335i and 335d to Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground (drag strip and raceway) for a direct comparison. The standard 335i European version makes 306hp and 295lb ft while the unmodified derv engine turns out 286hp and 420lb ft

0-60 in the 335i took a storming 5.1 seconds and reached the magic 'ton' in 12.5 seconds. In response, the 335d managed a credible 5.7 and 13.7 seconds to reach the same speeds, while a well run in but otherwise unmodded customer 'd' managed an even better 5.6 and 13.3seconds.

Around the track, the manual 335i lapped at 1.22.8 seconds, the automatic 335d managing the same lap 1 tenth quicker in 1.22.7. According to the tester, braking and corner entry were about the same, the diesel compensating for its automatic box and gaining on the 335i by virtue of its massive shove out of the corners.

Interestingly the best lap time was only 2.4 seconds slower than an E90 M3 under similar conditions.

Bottom line? Both are extremely fast cars, albeit with very different power characteristics.
