Oil change weirdness
Got an oil change done the last weekend and dealer forgot to reset the maintenance reminder. Still says I need the car serviced at 8000 miles. Today the check engine light came on. I tried resetting the oil change indicator and it said "Reset Impossible." I noticed my car wouldn't even remote start anymore (see pic below). After few miles of driving the check engine light went away. Remote start is working fine too. Not sure what's going on. Seems strange check engine light would come on.
Is this all related to the maintenance reminder? Anyway to reset the maintenance reminder to the next interval? |

What are you talking about? Your instrument cluster is correctly saying you have 8000 miles to your next service in August 2023 (next year) - which is one year from today. It's not saying you need to service it at 8000 miles. It is saying you have another (new) 8000 miles to go. It's probably saying 'Reset impossible' because it was... well.. just reset already.

Then that means the check engine light I got is another issue. Not sure what that could be. It cleared out on its own. It was preventing remote start from working. Will have to keep a close eye on it. |

Maybe the oil change intervals are different in USA but for mine - in Germany - the interval is around 28000 km (around 17000 miles). So 8000 miles sounds abnormally low to me.

With my G05 X5 (first BMW of mine with remote engine start and iDrive 7), most software updates disabled the remote engine start setting. It's simply a matter of re-enabling it in the A/C preconditioning settings sub-menu.

If you could not get any alerts on idrive about your check engine light, I'd hook up an OBD 2 reader.
As a matter of fact, I think I need a new on. Mine was a pimp one. About 10 years ago! LOL |

Remote start is deactivated anytime the CEL is on. Once you clear the light the vehicle will then be able to remote start. If the light comes on again I would stop in at the dealership to have them check it. You could also just make an appointment to have that light reset & mention the check engine light came on, they can pull codes even if the CEL is off, it will sometimes store history/pending codes. 17k miles is NUTS!!! Wow. Golden rule here is 3000 miles for regular non synthetic oil & 5000 miles for synthetic. Yes the oil may still be good to use but I've seen way too many engines destroyed from lack of oil changes. |
