Performance tires as in summer tires? Good luck. Will you get better traction with winter tires? Yes.

Recommendation: Buy winter tires

No

I just tried it the other night on my way to get my snows installed. It was very difficult to get moving from a stop on the slightest incline. Stopping is horrible. There are several sets of snows for sale here, just do it. Plus summer tires ride like crap when they are cold.

This topic has been beaten to death. next time.

And if you value your life and that of others for the love of God either get some snow tires or stay off the freakin road.

Actually he could get around in NYC with all season tires during small snowfalls, but not very well or safely.

You "can" but you are likely to crash or get stuck

Get winter tires before the first snow hits.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

You wont be able to move, you shouldnt even be driving those tires in the rain at low temps.

The same compounds that make summer tires so great and sticky in the summer are the compounds that freeze in the winter making it like ice on ice.

It's impossible to move at all with any sort of control with snow/ice on the ground if you keep the summer tires on, but it's pretty fun trying.

My car came with summer tires (got it in Denver in December) and I almost crashed when driving from the dealer to my house. Don't even think about using summer tires in winter conditions. You WILL crash.

as a fellow New Yorker I can answer this from first hand personal experience.

The answer is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo, last year
(my first winter with the car) it snowed 3x first day of snow fall , was a light snow maybe an inch, the car could not make it around the block.

second time it snowed I was caught off guard, and it snowed about 6" I drove 10 miles an hour int he right lane like I was an 85 year old women, I have never been more scared in a car.

that being said, usually around here by the next day the snow is gone and the roads are clean, so if you can avoid driving on the days it snows, you should be okay, otherwise get snow tires!

No need to say "in the rain" in that sentence. It is VERY dangerous to drive on DRY roads with performance tires, assuming it's cold enough, as the tire loses it's flexibility.

Even as a an experienced driver in snow that enjoys driving in snow and loves challenges, I was very scared last week when there was .5 inch of snow on the ground driving 10 miles to my home (4K miles on tires). I first thought that the traction control would take care of me but it seemed that the traction control was confused because there was almost no grip.

So even if you are a rally car driver, I would not try driving in .5 inches of snow. As noted, the tire coupound becomes very hard and is less traction as the camber and cast of the wheel changes when you turn the steering wheel.

Not even with 6 wheel drive?
Mine only has 4 and it did great in the snow with Michelin Pilot Sports.
And I was doing donuts in the parking lot like there was no tomorrow.

Like everyone else said, no way.

I had summer performance tires on my car and wouldn't be able to move a foot without sliding laterally. They were like ice hockey pucks. Even the all season tires I had were bad. I could move in straight lines most of the time but on inclines, forget it. In fact, one time I did a 360 on the road at about 25mph. Fortunately, there was no one near me. These were on Yokohama Advans.
