/40 Profile Tires on 18 x 8.5" Wheel?

I have E90 335i with Sport Pkg so 18 x 8.5" Rear wheels with 255/35 tires. Is it possible to use /40 profile tires on 8.5" wheels and get basically the same end result as 255/35? If so, what would be the equivalent width?

Use the tire calculator above.

The tire size that would give you the closest diameter as the stock tires is 225/40/18. However, I would go with 235/40/18 (a little higher diameter but very negligible).

If I did that would they look OK or would they go in a bit in width toward the thread. I.e. narrower at the tread than at the rim? As opposed to the 255/35 that would be same width at tread and rin, yes?

You will have less tread (narrower width). For the 18x8.5, 255 is perfect because it offers some lip protection. 225 or 235 will look okay, just no lip protection.

Does anyone have any pics of what a 235/40 or 245/40 tire would look like on an 18x8.5" wheel (ideally style 162)?

Something I don't quite get. According to tire calculators, a 225/40 tire has a width of 8.86" and is used on 8" width rims. A 255/35 tire has a width of 10.04" and is used on 8.5" rims. By comparison with the .86" overhang for the front tire it would seems that a 255/35 tire is an additional 0.7" too wide for an 8.5" rim to start with.

Im running 245/40/18 all around on my stock 189's with NT05's. (18x8f 18x8.5r)

These photos probably aren't the best, but it'll give you somewhat of an idea of how they'd look.
