Coding out ediff on Xdrive

Hi everyone,

I'm having a rear LSD installed on my 435i Xdrive and the shop that is doing the work is very well known for the quality of their work. Now, I have heard of people coding out the ediff when an LSD is fitted but for Xdrive, does the ediff also work on the front axles? The shop doing the work has is saying that in order to maximize the potential of the diff, coding out the ediff is necessary. Will coding it out throw a DTC code?

IIRC if you just fully disable DSC then ediff is off. DTC is what uses the ediff by applying brakes. So i guess why would you need to code it out? Are you saying you want DTC without ediff? I am not sure what else DTC does besides reduce TC intervention and apply ediff instead of full TC. Maybe there are some nuances someone else can explain

The shop is going to code it out completely to where it doesn't exist. I just wanted to know if ediff works on the front axles for Xdrive.

Not 100% sure about the BMW, but typically there is no "LSD" type action on the front axles since you lose steering when the diff locks.

I've only seen that on some really old school dodge ram's with a pumpkin up front and a LSD for mudding.

Should also mention, that's why there really is no actual 4WD vehicles. They claim they are since power is available at each axle, but have an open diff up front to allow steering. Under slip conditions you really only have a 3WD. Which is still better than the 1WD that an open diff RWD gets.

That makes sense. Hence why I'm adding a mechanical LSD to the rear.

Yes. In our case, it's more 2WD with the ability to move the power to the front/rear axles. limited slip is the real option.

Yup! I'm excited for it.
