Arrow WHICH WINTER TIRES - gary?

I know this is a repost but im on tirerack about to buy winter tires for my stock 162s and dont know which ones to get

I dont want runflats and im never going to switch tires on and off the wheels, im gonna keep the 162s on my sport package for my winter set and use my rims in the summer

I live in northern NJ and see some snow, sometimes bad storms, but most of the time dry, cold roads... sometimes it rains in the winter too - sleet, ice, rain, etc.

What tires should i get from tirerack... these are what came up for standard 18s

I Vote for Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4/5's

while they may be a little noisy...thats because there are metal studs

Ive been cruising around on ice/snow/ice, and I feel safer than in my fwd accord.

335i+winter tires with studs ftw

Studs are overkill for NJ. I'd go with the Goodyears since they are the cheapest..... frankly any of these tires will go great, especially compared to an all-season. Otherwise I'd get the new Michelin PA3. Looks like a good closeout deal right now.

Go with either the Bridgestones or Dunlops. I have the LM25 and they're great all around.

The two best we've had experiences with so far for that type of driving have been the Blizzak LM25 and Dunlop Winter Sport 3D.

Get the Pilot Alpines. They last the longest and do better in snow in my experience.

The Goodyears are very good tires, not some cheapo knock-offs from China. Like I mentioned before, ANY of these tires, all from quality, name-brand manufacturers will be an excellent choice. There's not tire here that is "bad" and any difference in snow/ice traction is a matter of small percentages, something you'd only determine in a controlled test.

The General Altimax Arctics are dirt-cheap, but have tested better than Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4s costing almost three times as much. Just because something is inexpensive, doesn't always mean it's bad.

LM25's handle great in the junk and the dry, I have been running them for 2 yrs, dad runs them on his RS6 too.

Dunlops have great reviews as well.

don't go goodyear unless they are the GW3's (which is what I have).

with the other choices left, i would have probably gotten the dunlops had I not found the gw3's on ebay in the size i needed.

only place online other than random ebay dealers is tirefactory.net

theyre really hard to find...and you need to know your local installer or they might not put them on for you...

*disclaimer: I only use these tires where legal and have had them mounted in a place where it is legal to drive them*

Wow thanks. Is the performance in the snow a lot different compared to regular winter tires such as Dunlop sp winterspot 3d's ?

I'll say that I was passing 4x4 trucks comfortably (not speeding or anything, still have to be careful)...and ice cracks underneath you

Drove my friends car with blizzaks and I have to say that I didnt feel nearly as comfortable in the nasty weather, btu on the flipside, when its dry out/clean, the blizzaks are more comfortable

I threw comfort out the window though, I wanted something that gets me thorugh the bad weather, I can live with the road noise because I need to be sure I can get around whenever (for work etc).

Studded tires aren't really much better than standard studless tires like the Michelin X-Ice Xi2, Blizzak WS-60, etc. They average about 10% better than performance type tires (like the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D) in the snow.

Ice is where the studded tires really shine. For example the in the 2004 Motor magazine tires test, the studded Gislaved Nord-Frost 3 accelerated on ice 93% faster than the Nokian WR, a performance winter tire. 7.5 seconds vs. 14.5 seconds: 5 - 30 kph.

In the 2006 test, the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 accelerated on ice 102% faster than the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D. 4.1 seconds vs. 8.3 seconds: 5 - 20 kph. In the same test, the studded Hakkapeliitta 5 stopped 63% shorter from 50 kph than the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D in ice.

Quite frankly I'd get the General Altimax Arctic any day over the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4. They are about 1/3 the price vs. the Hakkapeliitta 4, but tested better than the Hakkapeliitta 4 one year and tied it another year in the Motor tests. The General Altimax Arctic is the exact same tire as the Gislaved Nord-Frost 3.

You can see how the Hakkapeliita 4 and Gislaved Nord-Frost 3 (General Altimax Arctic) compare in these tests:
