Lowering without sacrificing ride quality?
I'm looking for opinions on the best kit for lowering my M4 Xdrive. I don't want it slammed to the ground. Something that will eliminate some of the wheel gap. I have read many reviews on the AST springs. It seems like they sacrifice much of the ride quality. I have seen some say there bouncy.
KW seems to lower the rear to much at max hight adjustability. How does the MSS ride? Is the BMW M performance kit released yet? |

I'm going through the same evaluation of the options for my G82 Comp xDrive, and have looked into the following:
- H&R springs (I believe these are 30mm drop front and rear) - Eibach springs (20mm drop front and rear) - KW HAS (adjustable obviously) You can get any of these now for the RWD model but the H&R and Eibach's don't seem to be available for the xDrive yet. My understanding is that the front springs are different between the M4 models, possibly due to the additional weight at the front of the xDrive. I don't want my car slammed either, so am going to wait for the Eibach's to hit the market. There is a place in the UK (Motech Performance) who have received some prototype springs for testing, so hopefully they won't be too much longer before they're available. EDIT: Having emailed the guys at Motech today, the Eibach springs for the xDrive probably aren't available until later this year - gutted! ("Eibach are still looking to have stock of all X-drive springs later this year , at a guess Sept/Oct.." The Motech video for this is here and to me, it's the perfect ride height:

Not sure where you're seeing the consensus on the ASTs, but my ride is great! I don't think its overly bouncy/harsh and I think the stance is absolutely perfect.

I just lowered mine on KW, it's a little stiffer but not by a lot. Drove it for 200 miles this weekend and still manageable in bucket seats although my wife would disagree but she wasn't a fan of the bucket seat comfort to begin with.
Going to do an alignment today and get it corner balanced. |

I phoned you the guy (Mike) at Motech this afternoon, really helpful guy and it sounds like they're a good option, albeit they're perhaps a bit lower than I was originally planning He absolutely advised against fitting the RWD-compatible springs, Eibach, H&R or any others, as the additional weight at the front of an xDrive should have a different spring rating I'll include the 10/12 spacers too, so fingers crossed no rubbing even with Pirelli's fitted |

I live in PA though. Roads here are bad. Did you have any of the spring creaking that many talked about with AST springs? |

I agree that ride height on the M3 is good. Problem is our M4s look much higher in the rear as apposed to the M3. Even if it's an optical illusion. Plus I would be worried about throwing off the whole balance just installing front springs. With my G80 I did not feel I needed to lower it but the G82 I do. |

100% agree. If anything, the H&Rs are probably the stiffest of the bunch.

Im on MSS with only a slight bias since Ive always used KW on my cars (via HAS) but it wasnt readily available and still have them on my M8. Of course I drop my cars (G80's)aggressively so to speak but in reality they drive so well with the MSS.
Spring rates are key and they match up with the OEM dampers very well. In fact, I liked MSS so much in this regard that I moved the same set up from my G80 RWD Comp to my X drive G80. I can only imagine that a car that is not as low as mine on MSS will drive just a bit more comfortably. I personally love road feel as long as I can maintain a proper compression and rebound vs the multi bounce factors that other springs have delivered in the past with my ownership. MSS has that one bump on compression and one bump up which I want; unless Im rolling at 100 plus and hit a ginormous undulation where any car would bump down and up hard. BMW did it right with the dampers with the G80 so Id fathom that almost any spring (almost) will work great maintaining strong quality and performance while gaining that all so important form.

My call is either KW HAS or MSS.
KW HAS is currently having issue with the rear where you can't go any higher than slight gap on the rear. MSS extra low kit will allow the front to be as low as KW HAS and the rear have more adjustment to go up than KW HAS.

For those that want a bit more gap, a spacer kit is offered to move around the adjustment range if so desired, but not at all required.

I have a 1000+ miles on the ASTs and I am very happy with them. Ride quality is great and stance is spot on (per my taste). I have had 0 noise issues or any other issues for that matter.

I have the eibach springs and the difference in ride quality is marginal. I'm surrounded by speed bumps and pot holed country roads, of course you notice a slightly harder ride but overall it really isn't anywhere near as hard as I thought it would be after the switch.
