Why is it called e90?
This is a question that me and my buddies could not figure out.
Is there any reason to the name of it being called e90? e46? e91? or is it just a number tossed out by BMW? Thanks! ~Mehale |

"Internally, BMW associates an "e-code" for each generation of a series ("E" stands for Entwicklung, German for development or evolution). These "chassis codes" only change to signify a major redesign of a series, or the introduction of a new series. BMW AG reported in September 2006 that BMW would switch to the letter "F" for their future models, beginning with the F01 7 Series replacement."

i was actually asking more specifically to the number, not the "e code". I knew the "e" part of the equation, but i figured 90 meant something since they don't always start at 0 with the models.
e46? why not e40. sorry, i was not clear with my question. |

because there was an e40. it just was not put into production. it could have been a project or some thing. just like there was a e35, but we dont know what it was.

Not a dumb question.
I'm sure others were thinking the same thing. I knew about the "E" But never really understood why they were numbered like that. . . E36 and E46 were both coupes and sedans but now its totally different. E90 Sedan E91 Wagon E92 Coupe E93 Cabrio And why not give the 1 series, 3 series, 5 series, 6 series, 7 series, and 8 series their own number line. . . Like 1 series = E100 3 series = E300 5 series = E500 and so on. . . That way every year there after would be able to be E101 or E102 and so on. Right now everything seems so mixed up |

Each concept in line gets the next number in line. The E38 was thought up before the E39. Then the E46 was thought up. E40-E45 were concepts that didn't make it into production.

So there were 44 different models before the e90 came out that did not work out while they were making the changes from the previous e46? Dayum!

Sure. It's the 90th concept since they started numbering cars this way.

I don't get it. Mid-cycle refreshes don't get a new number, but some random concept or prototype that no one outside the company ever sees does get a new number? Sounds fishy to me.
