Go Ahead and Build Your Own 335d Sedan
It's ready, I just built my 335d
My 335d Sedan 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine Rear-wheel drive See all standard features Base MSRP $43,900 Titanium Silver Metallic $550 Black Dakota Leather $0 Dark Burl Walnut wood trim $0 Cold Weather Package $1,150 Premium Package $2,650 Sport Package $2,150 Sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters $100 Navigation system $2,100 Rear manual side window shades $575 HD radio $0 iPod and USB adapter $400 Premium hi-fi system $875 Destination & Handling: $825 Total MSRP as Built $55,275 Only playin, I cant' afford that price way to high for a 3 series. I would consider if it was not so expensive up front. Will BMW really sell alot of these? The idea is great just why so expensive? |

When a 3 series starts approaching a price of a slightly used 911 you know something in the world is upside down.

Funny, I can't click on the "build your own" on the bmwusa homepage anymore, but I have to go into the three series and then click on "build your own." At least I can see what I ordered the other day.

I was thinking as far as the price is concerned, the public is only gonna tell it's a diesel by the d on the end of them emblem, everything else about the car is exactly the same as the regular 335i right? So it's not like your neighbor is going to say look everyone at my $55K 3 series.
Is it the engine that warrants the increase in price? Or does BMW think people will be buying these to keep for 10 or more years? I think to really see a savings a person would have to keep this kind of car for more than 4 years. Why wouldn't BMW price this diesel lower than the regular 335 to encourage people to save money and the environment, they'd sell a whole lot more of them that way. Why go above the price of the regular 335 just because it's a diesel? |

335i sedan I just priced with just about every option except active cruise-$54,020 335d sedan optioned exactly the same -$55,795, you are paying an extra $1775 for a car that's gets 22/33 mpg vs 17/26 and an engine that will probably be close to bullet proof. Its really what you want more and you make your decision but $1775 isnt a huge difference when financed and I am sure you can deal on that. I am not saying that 55k is cheap, but these days its in line with the market look how expensive Audi's have become lately.

I purchased my loaded M3 for approximately 4900 more than how I would of spec'd out a 335d. I guess I am happy I splurged on the M3 instead of waiting for the diesel. I am sure it is a great car but it makes my M3 seem like such a bargain. I know they are completely different cars but when I purchased my M I went in to get info on the diesel. lol

Wow, diesel is $2.75 here in Northern California. Nice to see other states are trying to make California fuel prices look cheap.

My 335i Sedan
3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine Rear-wheel drive Blue Water Metallic $550 Black Dakota Leather $0 Dark Burl Walnut wood trim $0 Cold Weather Package $1,150 Premium Package $2,650 Sport Package $2,150 Sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters $100 STEPTRONIC automatic transmission $1,325 Navigation system $2,100 Rear manual side window shades with power rear window shade $575 HD radio $0 iPod and USB adapter $400 Logic7 sound system with Surround Sound and Digital Sound Processing $875 Destination & Handling: $825 Total MSRP as Built $52,800 If you subtract the government rebate on the 335d, it's total comes to $54,375. So the diesel is $575 more than the gasser. BMW invested quite a bit in the engineering for the 335d to be introduced into this market (much more than just the urea injection system), according to club member mapezzul. We're getting a deal on the diesel. Fuel prices are very volatile. 3 months ago the diesel easily beat the gasser on a miles/$ basis. It's very probable that the fuel prices will go back to that again. So it comes down to actually driving the diesel and comparing it to the gasser. Since very few of the N American posters on this board can claim to have driven both at this time, we should just wait until we have a chance to do so before bashing the idea of a BMW diesel. You only need to look at the number of diesels BMW sells in the rest of the world, and maybe poke around on the UK subforum on this site to see the opinion of those who have driven both. |
