G80 G82 G83 Engine (S58) Main Bearing Shell Recall (cont...)
This is just a continuation thread from the original posted by Sbm007 regarding the recall of certain production group S58 engines and their main bearing shells.
Most of the details are on the first page of the link below. https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1865201 More info as of 2Dec2021 (apparently affecting MT only?): https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1880062 Note: the above link is currently dead; don't know if temporary or long term. I'll leave it here for a while just for awareness of the MT discussion, and in hopes that it will come back to life. I feel that BMW is trying to fly under the radar with this issue, which could very well be nothing more than a cautionary measure. However, it would not hurt to keep it on our radar just in case. Thanks to Sbm007 for initiating this post. Note: this thread was being buried daily in the "Purchasing, Delivery" forum. Traffic is not so bad here in the "Mech. Maint.... Recalls" forum, so it'll be easier to keep an eye on this topic.

Thanks for keeping this alive and posting in the right category. I'm one of the affected. Car runs strong and no performance issues or weird noises at 1700 miles. I'm driving it pretty hard when I take it out. I gave up on looking for a solution as BMW won't give a straight answer. More will be revealed....in the interim I'm really enjoying the car.

And same here. I'm affected based on dates, but not on recall search tools, but doesn't stop me from putting the M4 through its paces.

So as we all know, the poster stating this was only impacting MT cars is not correct. I just got off the phone with my SA who called to schedule the service for the recall on my M3 comp.
He was looking at the diagnostic while on the phone and his words were "surgery, but it doesn't look to be too bad." From his understanding, its not a full engine pull. His review indicates its an oil pan drop which will make the inspection (and repair if needed) possible. He also stated they inspect first as not every car identified by BMW will need to be fixed. The tech will be a BMW M certified master tech (whatever that means I know it shouldn't mean a low level tech). He also said he expects me to have my car back within a week. My car is set to go in for surgery on 12/27/21. I'll keep everyone posted. |

I'm not super knowledgable about engine mechanics, nor do I know the specifics regarding this recall, but since an oil pan drop was mentioned, this video came to mind. Maybe the work is something similar to this?
(Since I'm sure someone will comment, yes, I know it's not the same engine and possibly not the same issue addressed in the video, but maybe it's a similar approach to access the necessary components) |

So I dropped my car off this am for the main bearing shell recall. Apparently there are 6 possible bearing shells that need to be replaced, but my car only has 1 that appears to be impacted. They will be inspecting all others however.
He said they have a list of VINs. He didn't tell me how many cars are on it, but he said its quite extensive. SA confirmed my parts are in and he anticipates having my car back to me this week. He said he'll get me an update as soon as he has one and he hopes its before mid-week. The only thing he guaranteed me was that I will not have my car back today (obviously). I'll update once I know more. |

How many miles did you have? And what state are you in, if you don't mind asking. Also, build date. And thanks for the update. Hope for the best outcome.

Here's my Wednesday (non)update for you.
Checked my 360 remote cameras. Car is still sitting in the parking lot at the dealer. I reach out to SA. He texts me saying "good news...the car is being worked on, bad news...it won't be ready by new years." I respond and let him know I know that's not accurate and the car is not being worked on as its sitting in the parking lot and I send a screen shot back of the camera picture. I also tell him I want a better loaner (which he promised) as I'm in a base 3 series. He says he misspoke as they had to open a TSARA case for the tech, which is in process and they're waiting on the TSE to come in. He did say he'll swap my loaner. I'm not annoyed I won't get my car back this week (well slightly) since I expected that. What I am annoyed about is the bullshit. Don't lie dude - just give me the correct info. I'm not some idiot that doesn't know what's what. That's all for today folks. EDIT: no less than 2 minutes after posting this, the SA texts me letting me know the TSE is at the dealer and the car is being pulled in! Lol. |

Did they say how they determined whether any of yours needed to be replaced? My X3M has been at the dealer since 12/16 and has been inside with the last activity per the app being on 12/22. I was told they were waiting for the engineers to analyze data and get back to them. Not sure if the holidays and vacations are at play here or what but the lack of information and transparency has been very discouraging. |

Originally I reached out because I wanted someone to ride with me to hear the odd noise I am getting at low speed braking (15-25mph) that they had told me was normal but i am not convinced. This was around 12/2 and my SA booked me for 12/16 so I could get a loaner. When I showed up 12/16 and waited they told me the foreman was too busy but that they had the parts and were going to handle the recall while I had the loaner. It didn’t move from 12/16 to 12/21.
So the SA did make the 12/16 appt to handle the recall. Not going to be happy if after all this time nobody bothers to deal with noise at braking. I miss my car. They said they had to inspect and determine whether they need to be replaced but that it was mainly the manuals that were impacted. I know this forum has something about that mentioned and indicating it wasn’t true so who the hell knows what or who to believe. |
