this is a official response from bmw in regard turbo lag
I call bmw today to get some information about turbo lag:
Dear Mr. Del Rosario: Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding your 2007 BMW 335ci. We appreciate your inquiry. In an effort to address specific noise concerns, BMW updated the turbocharged engine software on 335i/xi and 535i/xi models built from June 2006 through March 2008. The updated software causes a small amount of increased “turbocharger lag” under certain circumstances and, while not substantial, the lag may be perceptible to the most sensitive BMW drivers. X6, 135i, and 3 Series / 5 Series vehicles from March 2008 production onward are not affected. Release of the new software to restore the original turbocharger response is planned for January 2009, and it will be available for vehicles produced from September 2007 through March 2008 when they are brought to an authorized BMW center for a repair which requires a programming update. Clients with vehicles produced from June 2006 through September 2007 may request installation of the January 2009 software update. Clients who get this update should understand that there is a possibility of slightly increased engine noise levels under certain circumstances. At the present time, BMW is unaware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this issue. If you have any further questions, please respond to this e-mail or contact the Customer Relations and Services Department at 1-800-525-7417, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time. Again, thank you for contacting BMW. Sincerely, Thomas W.Customer Relations and ServicesRepresentative Last edited by hope335i; 11-21-2008 at 12:50 PM.. |

I'm still a bit confused and miffed that the older models can just come in and ask for a sofware update, but the newer ones have to come in for repair before they'll consider it?
Effin a. I hate fibbing. It looks like that's what I'll have to do though... |

I was at the dealer yesterday for service and had an issue, they wanted to update my software, I said NO don't do it, I don't want any turbo lag. He told me the version of software they had was 31.1 or 31.2, I said until I verify it won't increase my lag, i'll wait on fixing my minor radio issue. The mechanic working on the car owns a 335i also and has not done any updates yet either. My car is a 12/31/06 build. I'm wondering if the new software planned for '09 with "increased engine noise" means more power?

Thats just unacceptable. For $50k we should NOT have to choose what we want. We should get NO RATTLE and THE NO LAG. Kinda a crappy situation, and I dont like it being in the market for this car, but man, I cant get any other car, this thing just drives soooo wellll.

Well the jury is still not out on exactly what it entails, but because the rattle is hardware-related, and they claim to be giving our lag back without replacing the faulty components themselves, I'm afraid it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out they're just throwing the problem back at us. Especially the way they've minimized the issue by claiming "sensitive" drivers are the only ones who can tell, etc....
I can deal with the damn rattle. But don't make it sound like you've fixed the real issue, BMW. The heat got put on you, and you went for the quick fix under the guise of actually rectifying the problem. I'm not stupid, and neither are most of the other people who buy these cars. It pays not to sh*t where you eat. If indeed there is a real fix in January, then I wholeheartedly apologize to BMW. But I just don't think that's the case at all. |

You sure you about that? I'd give it a second thought before considering the N54 and all it's issues. They still haven't found a solution to the HPFP failures except replace them with refurbished ones. I guess if being stranded (like others have experienced on this forum) isn't such a big deal, then yes, you're right the 335i does drive well.
