engine sounds

On my 330 manaul car, I noticed difference in sound when reving in neutral vs 1st gear.

Take for example, gear in neutral and when i rev the engine i hear vrooom. Now gear in 1st and when I rev engine I hear vroooom (a bit more louder). Could someone with a manual try this out and see if you noticed a difference in sound as well?

Any idea why?

When you're in neutral, essentially, it's only the clutch, when you put it in gear, you're actually using the 1st gear so more work for the engine, i.e. more sound?

I thought when you are in neutral, the engine is the only thing moving (reving)?

Only if you're also not moving. When you're moving, the gears connected to the drive shaft are moving. Not really related to the OP, just sayin'

Re: OP, it's completely normal. When you're revving the engine with the car in neutral, the engine is hardly doing any work. It's only using a tiny bit of fuel and air to make the engine spin around. When you're in gear, it's using a lot more air & fuel => producing more exhaust gasses => more noise.
