Service Record denied at dealership

I asked the SA at my local BMW dealership, Tulley BMW, here in New England for a full service record of my car. He told me that I would have to get written permission from the previous owner in order to pull the record up.

Is this legit ?

Isn't it all stored on the car?

On my own G30 even elected work or repair work is included.

Yes, according to him anything and everything can be downloaded from the Key Fob or computer service records, but in order for me to see the reports prior to me owning it, I would have to get written permission. Seems a bit over the top to me.

All I want to see is what the car was serviced for previously.

But is in the car already on iDrive you don't need to read the fob.

Go to vehicle settings and find the service record, you can see all entries and even click on them to read what was done.

I'd say your SA has a stick of something up his butt. You might want to find a new SA or new dealer. Unless the service tickets have personal information, there's nothing federally protected by disclosing service history. You own the vehicle in question. Or, don't you own it yet?

Own my 2020 M550 as of Sept 1 2021. I thought it was sketchy. The previous owner was the owner of another dealership. His personal vehicle. Did not think getting a service record would be such a big deal. Maybe I should I should contact the Service Manager at Tulley ?

Any dealer can pull service history with a VIN.

Tell your SA to get the stick out of his/her backside.

I hope this is true, but then again im wicked pissed off. Why would someone say that to a customer owning at $90K+ vehicle. This is just wrong!

Sounds like this SA or Tulley is a real gem. Try again, more forcefully, try the Service Manager or call other BMW dealers. If none will assist call BMWNA. You now own the vehicle and have a right to know its history.

I've never had an issue learning history on cars I didn't even own.

Carfax has most info, but it will lack detail. My thinking is your dealer is trying to hide something about this specific car.

No, that is NOT legit. There is no such thing as BMW-Customer privilege. There is no Federal law that deems vehicle records as "confidential" and I'm not aware of any State law that deems them confidential either. I'd find a new dealer (and let the GM know why you aren't ever coming back).

As others have said, any dealer can pull the information. I contacted the service manager of the dealership in Warwick RI where my car was serviced and he emailed me back their own service records and just blacked out the prior owners name. This was pre-purchase and doing homework.

Someone here ran me a really cool vin decode where it had every entry and not dealer specific. I like the "customer states" information and of course the fix.

When you come upon an SA that won’t share service history….ask them to REDACT any prior owner information so that they can maintain their privacy.

If you’ve ever seen one (service history) it does have the prior owners personal information. And there’s comments on the print out to NOT share the info with a 3rd party. Again, the go-around for this is to have them redact that personal info so that you can see what the car’s service history is as the present owner.

Example of the service history from a 2008 540iT I used to own:

The previous owner had the car serviced at BMW Norwood. I'm going to email the service mgr and ask for a redacted personal info report.
