Batteries: Going to the dealership with a tune

Had trouble finding anything with this, but I think my battery died after just 8 months of use. UGH. Anyway:

1) Does the warranty cover dead batteries
2) Should I take out my JB3 before going to the dealership if it is a warranty issue?

Thanks all!

Actually, another question. If you call BMW (I'm with Long Beach BMW), do they come out with a battery, try to jump start, and if they deem that the battery is dead, do they replace it on the spot (which would be quite excellent)? I don't see why a dealership would go through the hassle of towing a car just to replace a battery when a field replacement is much more viable. Sorry, just never had experience with battery issues on a BMW. Some feedback would be appreciated.

No, BMW Assist is a towing service... they are no mechanics-on-call.

At most they can give you some gas if you run out, but anything else, they're going to tow/flatbed your car to your BMW dealer, if it's not too far.

Jump it and drive it to the dealer so there is no towing involved... And take out the tune, who knows what they'll void with that there

Batteries are include. (Unlike most kids toys.)

Jump start the car and drive it to the dealer. Even if it's dead, as long as the alternator works, the car will run until you shut it off.

Take out the tune. I wouldn't even bring the car in for wiper blades with a tune. Once the car goes behind the curtain, there's no telling what they will look at.

If removing your JB3 is too much of a hassle, you might consider having the battery checked at a local shop (Batteries Plus, or Sears) and if it's bad, buy a new one and install it yourself.

Options:

1) take out tune and jump start car to drive to dealer.
2) take out battery and take it to dealer. They can test it there and see if it needs replacement.

I would opt for #2 to save time. However, if the battery is good then you are back to #1 to have them figure out what is wrong.

thanks guys. yeah I was about to just go out and buy a new battery if mine is defective because the time I lose to taking out the mod and putting it back in is not worth the $150 or so on a new batt. taking out the battery and testing seems like a great alternative. thanks a million.

Are you sure the battery failed and is just not dead?

Highly unusual for a battery to fail after 8 months. A battery will last in Minnesota (-35F to 100F yearly) a solid 5-6 years.

by fail i meant dead. my car sat around for a week and a half and that might be why. regardless, I'm taking my batt out and to an autozone for testing. if its done for, i'm picking up a duralast 49 DL after some research online. $89.99 w/ exchange.

my car is a lease, is BMW going to whine about me not having the OEM battery when the lease is over?

Yes, they will have issues, AND if you have any other problems down the road and they notice an after market battery, they can refuse to fix the problem if its related to electrical issue.

Just take the car to the dealer and have it checked out, I wouldn't let Autozone put wipers on my car. What happens if those guys cross a wire or hook something up wrong Not worth it !!!

i want to but i'm a busy man going to and fro from WA to CA. I don't have time to wait til next Tuesday to goto the dealer to get a stinkin battery replaced. Hopefully, when I check it out, it'll just be a dead battery that needs a fresh charge. If not, I guess I'll pay for an OEM replacement from the BMW parts dept. I don't see why I need an appointment to simply go and swap out a dead battery - it should be like a 5 minute ordeal.

Thanks for the warnings, much appreciated.

The issue is if the battery is dead you do not need an appointment they need to take the car then. Call BMW roadside assistance and have them take it to the dealer, the dealer will then give you a loaner, this is what is supposed to separate BMW from the rest; make them earn it.

I would just take it up there screw making an appointment. Make sure you take out anything electrical thats not oem, because they will blame it on that and deny you. I brought my m3 in cause the altenator was dead was denied warranty because of an amp I had in the car.
