Removing parts from OE Strut

I want to remove the part circled in red from the front OE strut and transfer it to my Koni sport shock. Does it pry off? It is glued on? Does it come off easily or will it crack easily?

Does the Koni Sport shock require that part? I've never tried removing that part.

It's not shown on RealOEM as being a separate part from the strut. Do the Koni installation instructions say that it needs to be transferred?

Koni's instructions are . . . not that great. But I asked Koni and they say that part does have to transfer. They indicate that using this diagram

They say

"Though after our discussion a couple weeks ago I reached out to our Quality team in KONI Holland to discuss the missing parts as there was another gentleman who reach out about there being no bump plates in his shocks as well, it was then that I was informed that the bump cap for this particular shock is no required so long as you transfer over the factory dust cover and lower dust cover retainer cap from the original struts. The top cap from the original strut which secures the lower portion of the dust boot serves the same purpose (plus the securing of the boot) as the white plastic plate. If you have transferred the caps shown in the diagram below, you actually do not need to small white plastic plates, and thus the reason they are no longer included."

I swapped those (part circled in red) over to my Konis, they just pop off of the OE strut, though they don't securely attach to the Koni.

Thanks for the update. Do you hear any rattling as a result of the unsecured dust cap moving around?

So, Sachs (BMW OE) put a dust cap on their shock to
  • help keep out dust and
  • hold the dust boot in place

Then Koni decided to transfer the dust cap but since it doesn't secure to their shock it
  • can't help keep out dust and
  • can't hold the dust boot in place

Wait a minute . . . .

Yeah the boots aren't secure like OE on the lower side (strut side) but when the car is on the ground the cap is pressed against the strut by the compressed dust boot tension which is probably better than omitting the cap because the boot wouldn't reach the strut as well. The boot is still secure like OE at the top (mount side).

I haven't heard anything from the front end, and I frequently drive with windows down. I'm assuming there isn't any (much) movement from the dust boots since they're secured at the top and have tension at the bottom.
