1st Service - Oil Overfill : Bavarian (NI)

Just had the car in for its first oil service last week and now it has to go in again tomorrow to get engine mountings replaced due to a squeaking noise.

I thought that i would give the oil a check today beforehand and I am glad i did. The level is showing up to the top of the red plastic end. (see pic)

I wonder how much extra oil this represents and if I have done any damage in the last week - due to higher oil pressure.
I rang them up but they said that they would check it tomorrow and that it should not have caused a problem. (typical answer) I will however not be revving it out too much until it is sorted.

I am wondering how I should tackle the situation tomorrow. Any ideas would be welcome.

Having the oil level too high cannot increase oil pressure. The oil pressure is dictated by the pump which has a pick-up in the bottom of the sump - how much oil there is above this pick-up is irrelevant. There is a pressure relief valve too.

The problem with over-filling oil is that the crank can whip up the oil into a froth and get in the EGR and breathers and make a bloody mess. If they drain 1/2 a litre out it will be fine.

FFS, ejits! Mine is booked in for it's first service tomorrow. If this is what they are at i'm off to the Country Garage. And Bavarian have the cheek to admit their labour charges are the highest in NI as they provide the best service.

This makes me mad. Let us know how you get on mate

The car is back with Bavarian now. I showed them the photo from my phone (above) and they said that it should definitely not have happened and that they will leave it right.

I stated that it was ridiculous when you pay £100+ per hour that they can't even check the dipstick after replacing the oil.
The service guy was sympathetic and agreed that it was unacceptable.

I will let you know what sort of bullshit they feed me when I go back to lift the car this evening.

Glad to hear that no damage should have been done. Cheers Xenon.

GpAevo - My wife has now taken her car to Prentice BMW in Craigavon today for its first service. She has never liked the service in Bavarian. The only reason I go there is because it is close to my work.
The Cappucino and buns are tasty though

Shouldn't that be "oily mess"? Anyway, I agree.

I went in this evening and was told by the service guy that the car was low in oil and that they put another 0.4 litres in it.

I could not believe my ears. I then got the service manager and explained the whole ridiculous calamity to him and both he and the mechanic responsible went to the car and checked the oil.

It was still showing way above the top of the dip stick plastic end. The mechanic was quite shocked and swore that when he checked it, the level was low.

I then went with him to the service bay and watched while he drained over a litre of oil from the car. When he lowered it and checked it, the correct level was now showing. He felt very embarassed and bewildered.

I then challenged the service manager about this and after a few apologies, he said that I would get a good discount from my next service - so I suppose this is not so bad.

It just shows that you have to be vigilant, even when the so called 'experts' do work on your car.

Thankfully there are also no more squeaks from the front of the car since they replaced the engine mounts. I just hope that they did not put X5 ones in

I guess part of the problem here is the ridiculous way of checking oil in a BMW - When the car has "rested" for 5 mins after reaching operating temperature and at least a 20 min run..

Whatever happened to the simple positioning of the dipstick so that the oil level can be checked cold.

Yeah that is true - but BMW mechanics should be more aware of this unusual procedure than anyone.

GpAevo - Did you warn them not to overfill it?

That is shocking. Unbelievable.

At least in your case there is no potential for damage - compared to overfilling!!

Good luck with them

I have received a Customer satisfaction survey from them in the post. It will be fun to fill that in

I know on the cars with electronic dipstick there is a warning to fill with a litre of oil when it gets low.

Do cars with the manual dipstick still get this warning or is our "proactive" warning the Oil pressure warning coming on ;-)

Update! So they took a look and Yes! the oil level was well below what it should be. So one stinking e-mail to them and i had the boss on the phone, who couldn't apologise enough. Car sorted and a few sweetners coming my way.

However, as i pointed out, it should never have happened in the first place
